Default Capt. Ron Hamlin - Guatemala Fishing Report 4/18/08

The fishing in the past couple of weeks has been great overall, with a few slow days thrown in to make us really appreciate how good we have it in Guatemala.

On March 31st – April 3rd we had Shep Johnson down. Fishing was slow for our standards, raising 28 Sails, having 25 bites and catching 15.

Jim Perkins fished with us on April 4 th – 6 th. Jim Perkins is a world-traveling angler who has caught a 1,030 lb. Blue Marlin and a 1,018 lb. Black Marlin in the same year. He brought his good friend John and his son Justin. John and Justin had never been sailfishing before. Fishing was still slow for Guatemala but we raised 19, had 16 bites and caught 8. John and Jason caught all the fish and John said fishing with his son were some of the best 3 days of his life.

On April 7th and 8th, Mike Morrison had the same luck with the sails as it was still a little slow. We raised 15, had 8 bites, catching 4 on April 7th. The bite took off but, I was 30 miles away and missed it. The high boat that day had over 50, so the next day I was right there. My best action was on Blue Marlin. We caught 2 Blue Marlin, one about 300 lbs., and we tagged and released another one 400 lbs. on 30 # line. That was a great angling job on the second one.

We had Skip Hudgins, his son Johnny, and Henry Sands, a Captain from the Bahamas down on April 9th and 10th. These guys are all very good friends of Rob Newton, who was also there. In the 2 days the fishing got better and we raised 59, had 46 bites and released 21. On April 11th they fished on the Fishy Business with Capt. Tito and they raised 56, had 43 bites and caught 20. The fishing on all three days was over 40 miles away, so it was really nice to be in our new and very fast boats.

Now, we like to say just a few words about our new boat, a Cabo 40. We picked it up in October from Newport Beach, CA and ran it 2,170 miles here to Guatemala. We started fishing in November and we now have 1,400 hours on the motors, and over 15,000 miles over the bottom.

We’ve caught 1,070 sailfish and 30 Blue Marlin with the new boat. I think we have a hell of a boat, and I'm just now really learning how to run it.

Oh yeah, it also helped me break the 25,000-lifetime billfish mark! If I can fish 3 or 4 more years, I’ve got a chance at 30,000!

Anyhow, I need you to come down from June-September for our summer special, a tremendous 40% off and KIDS FISH FREE (one child per adult). The sailfish, and especially the blue marlin and black marlin fishing during the summer are awesome! You can find out more information on our web site at www.pacificfins.com.

Good luck and good fishing.

Ron Hamlin /Captain Hook
