Buying new RodNReel combos tomorrow? Recommendations. bottom fishing, jigging for tuna
I am buying a couple more combos tomorrow. I am looking for a durable reasonably priced reel that will handle a schoolie YF tuna but still be light enough for bottom fishing for the elusive red snappers.
I have a pair of tekota 800's and I might buy some more of them unless someone can talk me into something else.
I will probably rig them with 50Lb. braid backer and 75 yd. top shot of 50 mono and 20 yards of flourocarbon.
Thanks for the help.

Chris...I think the Tyrnos (shimano) would be a better option than the tekota. I have a tekota 700 and I do agree it is a very sweet reel....but the levelwind makes me a little nervous when fighting bigger fish. I would probably get a torium before a tekota now...although the level wind is very convenient...I am just not sure how good it is after several seasons of fighting 50-100 lb fish. The Trynos has the lever drag...so that way you can use it for live baiting, trolling, and chumming...all which are very hard to do with a star drag. And you can still jig and bottom fish with a lever drag...so you kind of get the best of both worlds. $250 for the Tyrnos 30 which holds 450 yds of 40 lb test. They kind of remind me of a cheaper (yet just as durable) version of the torsa. I would probably match it with a heavier Shimano Trevala jigging rod so you could jig with it and rip fish off the bottom.

I second the Tyrnos. I've got 5 Tyrnos 20's rigged with 40lb spectra backing and a 40lb mono top shot. They're put on J&M's Biscayne tuna rods and I love them for all sorts of fishing. In fact I used one as my shotgun when I was without a 5th 50W.

Eyecatcher,
What are the specs on the Biscayne tuna rods? Are they full rollers? To stiff to jig with? Price? I am about to purchase a few Tyrnos or some more trinidads and I was trying to figure out a good rod to put them on. Thanks

well I ended up getting 2 torium 30's on shimanl 50-100 jigging rods, and 1 torium 50 on a 80-200 shimano jigging rod. I figured the high speed would be better for jigging, and I liked the action of the jigging rods.
Thanks for the input guys,
Chris

Prop,
The 50-100 is too light in my opinion. With a decent amount of drag or a large fish the line will actually touch the front grip an dig into it. I've had it happen a few times snapper fishing but it was never an issue with big cobia or dolphin mainly because the fight was more horizontal than vertical.

Thanks jboos, I'll give them a shot in the morning on some Snapper and see how things go. If they feel to light I will swap them for the 65-200 lb. rods

I just returned a torium 20 and upgraded to an Accurate Boss 870 on my freestyle rod after a tuna trip to Venice, LA...The torium is fine as long as you dont want to put serious pressure on a fish...The anti reverse on my reel was failing on tuna. I was very dissapointed that the reel could not actually hold up to the drag pressure that it was listed to apply. My dad had his boss 870 and it was impressive enough to make the decision to upgrade a very simple one. I hope you dont have a similar prob to mine.

I Love shimano reels, but I would say that if you want a serious jigging reel from shimano it would have to be the torsa, or just dont turn the drag up on you torium. I just feel that when i am jigging it is often near structure, and I want to be able to bulldog whatever is on the other end. I do have a couple cuts in the handle of my 100lb freestyle rod, but i still like it...this has not happenned yet with the boss 870 on the Trevala 200lb rod, it is a pretty serious stick.
