Need For A Shock Leader

When I used to fish mono exclusively, I used to use about a 5' shock leader (ie, 12 lb. main line, a bimini to double it, and then the 5' shocker of about 20 lb, then the swivel and regular leader of about 2-3').

Do you think the shocker is needed with braid, since the braid is so much stronger and greatly overtests? Maybe just the braid tied to the swivel with the regular casting leader?

Shock leader does exactly what it implies It absorbs the shock, without it you will notice more pulled hooks Escpecicaly offshore trolling . Using braid is more of a reason to use a mono/Floro leader not less of a reason.

I always use a mono or flouro leader on braid. The visibility issue is big to me. For bass fishing I use a mono leader sometimes less # test than the braid. For snook and baby tarpon, I use 15 or 20# braid and 30 or 40# flouro. And so on.

Florocarbon is a good idea on any line.......
On braid it's more important to have some kind of leader to grab onto, to control the fish......
Grabbing braid when the fish decides to run will give you a very nasty cut..........ICM
