Headed to Playa del Carmen the first week of May would like to do some fishing. Some of the websites that I have seen say that the sailfishing should be good. Any recommendations on chartersor any other advice would be greatly appreciated.
Season has been a little slow starting this year. Should be pretty good in May. Check out www.wasabiloco.com. We'd be happy to take you out.

*sigh* Just got back from there a couple of weeks ago. Man i wish i was still there!!! Could see folks trolling right off the beach, but we didn't have enough time to fish ourselves. May is supposed to be the best month. Good luck and have fun!!!

We fished with the Capt Rick's team, 35' Bertram in June '06. Good trip, English speaking crew and they worked hard to make sure that everybody (3 kids included) caught something. They were located about 15-20 minutes south of Playa del Carmen in Puerto Aventuras.
Had I known about Wasabi Loco I would have given them a shout, but at the time the only recommendations I got was Capt Rick's.
captain rick's is the balls. i have fished with them many times. 1st week of may is historcally the best week fior a grand slam. ask for capt. rambo, he will find the fish!
You could tell they fish it hard! After chartering in NJ and NC alot, I was really impressed with how hard they worked to put us on some fish, we had 3 adults and 3 teen agers (daughter and nieces) and everyone caught something. I think we ended up with 4 sails, 2 baracudda and a couple yellow tails in a 4 hour trip. We actually came back in late even though they had an afternoon charter.
For what it's worth, we also book Capt Rick's boats and they book ours. If we can help, call 972.839.4706.
Cheers.

We try making it down there each year. We too usually go in May. Have a friend with a house next to "Fishermans Village". It is a time share place. Longer story shorter, for $150 half, $300 full day, we rent the local pangas and fish everyday we are there for the entire week. You role off the beach (some will beach in front of the house you are staying in) 1/4 mile and start trolling. We usually average 3-5 dorados per day and several sails. We also bottom fishing for grouper and sharks. Just walk the beach past the Blue Parrot and you will see the fishing boats. Also another beach further down that has a ton of pangas.
Not taking anything away from the big boys. If you can't afford to rent them for multiple days, this is a good option for the other days you are land locked.
Keep in mind that when you are fighting fish from these pangas, stay seated if you can. I've got some good video of catching blue marlin and sailfish from pangas that aren't more than 4' wide in some nice rollers. You will have a blast.
Got to love the locals. One more thing, if you think that you are going to try a panga for the day take tackle to trade. They have to pay thru the nose for tackle down there. I take boxes of bally hooks and trade for discounts. Works really well. Most of the locals love the needle eye hooks better than regular. I also bring a couple of fighting belts, cast net, etc and trade that stuff for a trip before I leave. Man they love tackle.
