back it with mono, or the easiest yes....cork tape or some kind of "cushy" tape, duct tape will work just make sure to give it 2 wraps to give it some bite!

Take 4 winds on the spool with the spectra before you tie your uni knot.

Default RE: Braid on spinning reel???

Over the years I've spooled millions of yards of braid onto to customers reels..IMO without something for the braid to grip, the line will eventually slip..Even when installed under hard tension via a machine. I always install just enough Mono to cover the base of the spool. and tie to the braid with an albright hitch. Tape will work to provide grip, but constant wetting/drying will cause the adhesive to break down, and heat can cause the glue to bleed out, leaving a sticky mess at the arbor.. Dacron imo, is not the answer, as it has the same "no stretch" characteristic that keeps other braids from gripping.. Any old mono will do, but I like to use a diameter similar or slightly thicker than the braid for ease of tying the albright.

IMO the biggest advantage of braid on a spinning reel is cast ability and to a lesser extent hook setting power. I use a mono backer and only enough on the reel to top off with about quadruple my longest expected. For me that comes out to about 150 yds. I've found the braid to bird nest pretty badly sometimes. I try to remember to trail the line on the way out to get the twist out and minimize that condition. The 4x length of line will alow me to cut out tangles and still be able to keep fishing that reel. Remember not to reel against the drag. Good luck. Mike

Mono backing of about 1/2 to 1/3 the pound test as the braid. I fill the spool about 1/4-1/3 with the mono, and top it off with braid. I connect the two with a uni-to-uni knot.

For offshore reels, I use only a little bit of mono (say 20 yards or so) and spool them mainly with the braid as you may need the reel's full capacity.

related question:

what is the best knot for braid to mono connection? I use a uni-to-uni, but I believe the braid is so strong that it can cut the mono and have had knot failure on my mono leaders when I tie the uni-to-uni.

Thanks!

I agree with mono on the bottom always. If you like to use a full spool always and have spares, use enough mono to avoid wasting the braid (twice a long cast for example). If you chase long running fish like boenfish or offshore, add more braid and less mono.
Be careful with uni+uni unless the diameter difference is reasonable... don't bother with 15# braid (about 4# mono size) and a 40# shock tip for example. The power pro website has some good examples.
