Offshore, what kind of loop are you making on the leader before you catspaw it to the swivel?
Main line:
For mono mainline I use a short Bimini twist catspaw to the 100#swivel.
For Hollowcore mainline I use a loop sliced into the mainline catspawed to the 100#swivel
Leader:
All my leaders are 30-50ft true windons like the photo below. Mine are the dacron loop windons. You just catspaw the leader to the small swivel.
There are many ways to rig and you just have to decide what works the best for you. We have been using the small barrell swivels for some time now. We have never had one fail nor have we ever had any guides destroyed by these swivels. I have used these swivels on 30-50 Tsunami rods with regular guides as well as my 50-100 roller guide rods. Now this is not to say it wont happen but it hasnt happened yet. Good Luck....Mark
i have a 26 regulator with 225 fourstroke yamahas. it holds 225 gallons and burns around 1.7 mpg. It is exactly 40 miles from my house to ches. light tower. range should be at least 350 miles. that would keep me in the 1/3out-1/3 in-1/3 reserve rule right? how far is the hot dog from cbbt? i have to buy the offshore chip for my gps. i only have the bay blue chart. thanks again!
chris
the hotdog is 37 or 39 miles form rudee... 24 miles give or take from ches light. BUT thats just a starting point, you may have to run to the cigar(another 15-18 miles) to have a good chance at finding some groceries.
Offshore,
Thanks for the info. Not trying to beat a dead horse but are you buying the widon leader with the loop already in it or are you making it and creating the loop yourself to attach to the swivel ? Just trying to figure out how the loop is created in the leader to attach to the swivel.
thanks!
I make all of my windons in the winter I will run through between 40-50 this year. You can go to Basils site he has some great prices if you dont want to make them yourself. Here is the link....Mark
You can go to this link and I have a video series on making a bridal windon for planers up to #12 old salty planer. It is a step by step on making the bridal windon which is the same as a regular windon if you leave out the two loops to attach the planer....Mark
It would not post the link . PM me your e-mail and I will send you the Link to the video series...
offshore, on your windon, is that a mushroomed(melted)end of mono sticking of the side near the loop?
danny
Danny,
Good eye!! The windon above is one I did as demo. Some people ball the end of the mono and feed it back into the Dacron at the loop end. I left the balled end out for the photo. I have tried this and see no benefit. If you make your windon correctly the and cinch the Dacron down over the mono before serving the end there is no way that the mono will come out of the Dacron.... ......Mark
I cringe any time I see a lighter, lit cigarette, or anything even remotely capable of getting hot near my line. I used to make the dacon wind-on(like yours) when I lived in costa rica and we live baited black marlin and giant yellowfins(customer ate it up). but aside from that, the spro's and 30-40 ft wind-ons are good enough for me and the 4 or 5 tunas run I do a year.
Id like to be doing one this weelend, but the wind is going to blow 30 plus.
As usual, Mark is correct. There are so many different ways to rig your leaders. I do mine a little different, as described below, but to me the most important item is that run of 25-30 of clean line.
I fish 40# momoi diamond, on everything but my bird rig, and my planer rod. I tie the 40 with actually a palomar to a spro wind on swivel. Tsunami makes some too, but I have found that the holes are sometimes not centered, so I only use the spro, and the small barrel swivels work as well. I then run 100 feet of 80# seaguars flour, crimped to the swivel. Just because I am so anal, and want to have such a long flouro leader, I then tie a four loop surgeons not in the end of the 100 foot run of my initial flouro. I then attach my LEADER to my initial run of flouro with a Yucatan knot. This leader is 25-30 feet long, and I keep about 20 of these on the boat, rigged with hooks and the wire traces. When my leader gets frayed, I just cut it off at the Yucatan, tie on a new one, and put the old flouro in a zip lock bag. When I want to switch my skirt, I cut the Yucatan. slide the old off, and put the new color on. It takes less then 3 minutes to do.
My main reason for doing it this way, is I can fish 125-130 feet of line in the water, and never have a swivel of any kind overboard. Is it overkill, probably, but it does do completely away with the swivel in the water in most cases, but, if we have a problem with a spinning bait, or kinks, we just run the line out past the swivel, let it ride for a couple of minutes, and bingo, twists are all gone.
Furthermore, I can typically take the left over leaders back, cut them off, and retie them a couple of times. Once they get less then 25 feet, they become bottom fishing, tarpon, or drum leaders. I can typically run the 100 foot section all year long without having to change.
I do not think it is any better then the other ideas, it is just the way I like to do it, and it never hurts to have a different perspective on how other people fish.
