I am rigging up a spinning outfit to do my jigging with. I purchased a Trevala spinning reel but I am looking for a reel to add. I looked at the Shimano Stella 10000 but holy sh$t. They are proud of that thing. Is this reel that good? Are there any other alternative spinning reels for jigging? Any opinions are appreciated.
Some use the bigger Penn spinning reels, which are quite a bit cheaper but they are heavier. The Daiwa Saltiga is an excellent reel, but it is even more expensive than the Stella. Daiwa has a Saltiga Blast that is much cheaper, and Shimano has the Saragosa.
The penn 9500 is the heaviest duty and drag and best bang for the buck for biggame spinning in my opinion. But if you want something a little better you could sell you car and buy an accurate twin drag 30 for $900
Have a friend who just got the Fin-Nor Offshore Spinning Reel, OFS85 from Angler Systems. That reel is impressive to say the least and it makes the larger Penn SS look small.
ditto,on the penn 9500 ss.for the money{around 150.}this reel is a beast and will handle tuna over 100 lb.s pretty easy.though they don't make it any more, they can be had on ebay.the parts are still easily available.penn replaced this reel with the 8500ssg,i think.the shimano stellar is an awesome reel but {in my opinion}not worth the 800.price tag.the finn-nor spinner is another large spool, big drag option, for about the same price as the penn 9500ss.
The shimano spheros 14000A at $139/24lbs of drag/spool lay down pattern and twist buster for spectra and 43" of retrieve per handle turn makes a good canidate. I have caught some large feeesh on mine, and they outcast my old Diawas and Penns.
I thought the Saragosa was their line of rods, not reels. I have a couple of these two.
The Saragosa has 44 lbs of drag while the Stella 20000 has 58lbs I think. Is 44 lbs of drag enough to pull AJ's and grouper out from a rig? Thinking of using 100lb braid
I am a tackle nut so I acutally own an Accurate twin spin, shimano torsa, and Shimano Thunus and 2 Fin-nors. I like all of them but if you want to jig for tuna and want a low cost alternative I would look at the Fin-no Offshore. This is one hell of reel for the money!!!
I have not had a chance to use the fin-nor ofs 95, but I checked my buddy's out and it looks solid. I would want to know more about the drag system . . .
You can't go wrong with a Penn 9500, it is solid. That's why all the ones on Ebay are being bought up by the Aussies for more than they cost when they were new. They know it is a long term investment as the reel is tough.
