I'm trying to remember the name of the charter we took. This place had about 6 old sportfishermen They have half day charters that take parties of 4-6 people. It was fairly inexpensive, we booked it out of our resort(aventura spa palace) with a booking agency called Olympus Tours. It wasn't too bad, the fish weren't biting too good. One thing, if you decide to go with this. When we did get a hookup(mostly sailfish), they asked right quick who wanted to mount a fish. If you wanted to mount a fish, you got the rod. If you didn't want to mount a fish, you don't get a chance at the rod if the fishing is slow. Just remember that all these charters have connections on shore that tips them if they bring americans wanting to have a fish mounted. For example, another boat was fighting a sailfish. That boat hailed our captain and asked us did we want to mount a fish as noone wanted to on that boat. They were going to pull alongside and hand you someone elses fish so you could mount it. I wasn't too impressed with that. So, fair warning, watch out for the tourist trap.
One thing, this place is absolutly beautiful to fish out of. You're fishing in 1000' water in sight of land and inshore the water is flatout beautiful. Have a great time, and I'd highly recommend geting your own boat charter with just your party on board.BTW, hit Playa del Carmen for some street shopping that is outa this world and check out the topless beaches less than 100 feet away!!

It makes me sad too read this. We run out of Puerto Aventuras, which is about ten minutes south of Playa del Carmen. We do not kill fish, period ! I can see something like this happening if the sailfish died while fighting it or something but certainly not otherwise. To my knowledge none of the boats at our marina kill billfish but we've had new guys move into the marina and set up shop so I can't guarantee it's not happening. I would very much like to know the name of the outfit you fished with if you don't mind pm'ing me. We can apply pressure to reduce or hopefully keep this from happening in the future.

Glad you enjoyed our area. It is indeed beautiful.

Cheers.

The local charterboats I have seen in the Cancun area are mostly old scows that likely came from the retired US fleet of charterboats. In the spring there are plenty of US charterboats there following the sailfish run, but in the summer you get what vettnman said.

Cancun is the poorest choice for fishing along the Riviera Maya. You are better off going to Isla Mujeres (getting kinda late) or south to Puerto Aventura (just starting). Cancun itself is the worst of everything.
