Looking to buy some trolling rods here shortly. They will be used for trolling, to catch wahoo, mahi, and tuna, They will be outfitted with TLD 25's and 30's. First question. What class rod would you go with. 20-50 or 30-80. second question. What line would you spool those tld's with, and what test with the aforementioned fish? Any help would be great. I know what brands of rods I'm going with, as well as reel brands. I'm just looking for weight class of rods and line. Thx
I troll with TLD 25's on Ugly Stick Custum rods, 30-50 class. The Ugly sticks have a pretty soft tip compared to most rods. I find if I put an umbrella rig or a heavy drag lure, the rod looks like it will break and makes me nervous. If you plan to troll with high resistance lures (deep divers and umbrella rigs) go for the 30-80 rods. I would say go 30-80 for the type of fish you list, in general. I use 20-50 for striped bass and blues. For tuna and whoo (we don't catch hoo's in the Northeast) go with the heavier rods and use 40-50 mono, or I use 60-80 braid with a 40-50 mono top shot for more capacity.
If it's between the 20-50 rods and the 30-80s, then I say go 30-80s hands down. I would plan on fishing 40lb line on the tld 25s and probably 50lb line on the 30's. It's much better to have the extra backbone for big fish, and I don't like whippy rods for trolling. GET THAT HOOK IN!
My lightest rods for trolling are TLD-25's on 30-80 lb. rods. I fish 30 lb line on the TLD-25's, 50 on 30TW's (40-100 lb rods) and 80 on 80SW's (50-130 lb rods). All my trolling rods have roller guides because we fish with 30' wind-on leaders using the low profile Spro swivels that can chip ceramic guides.
I fish TLD 25's with 40 lb Momoi mono. I also have ugly stick custom rods that have worked well, but I've slowly been replacing them w/ Chaos 30-50 class rods. They are shorter and much stiffer, also lifetime guarantee and good customer service. I've been very happy with them.
I got a couple of pinnacle rods last septemberI put my TW-30/''s on them, hooked a 25lbs wahoo about 25 ft behind the boat, first time out!
Great action on those rods, I think I have the the 20-50 lbs detachable butt, I chose the silver and blue wrapps. I'll check to make sure (not 30-80). They are a great value and exellent quality. Besides John is a nice guy who answered all stupid questions I had.
