Just attended the Canyon Runner Seminar in Atlantic City NJ this weekend, and this topic came up. Lee now has carbon fiber outriggers that are much stronger than aluminum poles. The seminar speaker uses them on his Regulator 29, and pulls three lines off of each without a problem. He also uses spreader bars on the outside without a problem, and highly recommends the carbon fiber poles. I have Taco 15' aluminum poles double rigged on my GS350 mounts. I could not use a spreader bar on the outside line, but do use a spreader bar on the inside line without a problem.

Do many people have gunnel mount riggers in their t-top (taco striker style)?

For t-tops and hard tops most people use the bases that swivel as well as allow the poles to adjust the angle. Like the Taco GS-250A and 350 bases. (I guess the new Tacos are 270s)

Taco also makes cheaper bases like the sport slam but you need to swivel those out yourself from the top of the t-top. The other mounts allow you to stand on your deck and just rotate the bases out via a handle from below the t-top.

The striker bases are only a couple hundred bucks compared to 800 or more. I know the differences but I was more thinking cosmeticly haveing them come through the hardtop. What it would it look like under the hardtop with gunnel mount riggers.

Each company makes different models of their outriggers. The T-Top mounted swivel style outriggers are not cheap, but a lot easier to work while at sea than either gunwale mounted or manual ones you have to lift out by hand.

While the strength of the poles is important for the task required, don't forget to ask about the maintenance requirement for keeping the swivel mounts working properly! Some are less maintenance intensive than others, and getting them torn down, serviced, and back together after they've frozen up is expensive too!

Rupp and Lee make excellent outrigger systems that have made a name for themselves over the years. Taco's are being used more, but I'm not sure of their long-term viability -- time will tell.

I had gunel mount riggers on my t-top they worked fine and didn't look bad. The problem was that they were dangerous to use...falling off the boat while putting them out, had to run with them straight up or down in the boat. I now have Lee sidewinder bolt ons and they are easy to use and might actually look better then the flush mount on the t-top.

Does the top have a mounting bracket welded into it? It may be set up for a lees or a rupp. If it has one I would buy that product. If starting new I would buy rupp. They are both good products but rupp service is great. I bent a section & gave them a model # off a 10 yr old set of 22 footers . Delivered 2 days later. They are helpful. Lee's will get the parts for you but they are less helpful and slower.
