For those of you not familiar with it the'Midnight Lump'it is a salt dome just off the coast of Louisiana fished by anglers every jan, feb, march for some good tuna and wahoo action. The gulf floor comes up to 195 feet with 400 foot plus water all around it. Every january the tuna and wahoo show up and give us a good time for two and a half months. Saturday they showed their face and marked the day as the start of the season. There was probably 30 boats on saturday chumming and trolling. No one really killed them. I think everyone was just excited they finally showed up. I had three customers fishing with me on the 'Cajun Venture' . The first yellowfin hooked was a 65-70 pounder on a bonita chunk. Meanwhile one of the other guys was reeling in beeliners two at a time off the bow. The next tuna bite was ten feet out the back of the boat. It looked like a 110-120 pound fish. He picked up the bait made a hard run and the line snapped. That's tuna fishing is all I could say. Next hook up was a 83 pounder which came on board with us to check out the fish box then the current changed and the big sharks moved in and took over the chum slick. The guys continued catching beeliners(vermillion snapper) and a limit of nice amberjack with one scamp grouper. The weather picked up and we took it to the house. All total the day was a success the three guys took home 29 beeliners, two yellowfins, one scamp, and three 40-55 pound amberjack. It's better than being at work. The diverse catches are common on the lump. All the years I've been fishing I've never seen any other place hold such a diverse grouping of fish. Billfish, tuna, tilefish, pompano, all sharks, all snapper and grouper, and just about everything you can think of is caught there. If you have any questions I can be e-mailed at
