Hey Guys,
I have a question. Thinking of using downriggers for tuna. I thought that it would be good to put a daisy chain or bar down to the tuna. Any thoughts? Thanks
We tried it out a few years back out EOC but the outrigger cable made an ungodly humming sound. That may have been because we were also trolling fast enough to keep the rigs and chains running right on the surface. Slow the troll down and it may work.
I'd be more apt to use it with a rigged ballyhoo/mackerel or a swimming plug rather than with a bar/chain. I think we were using a megabait swimmer.
I use a planer rod and a planer...which I can troll at speeds up to 7 knots and then pick which lure I want to run...
Drone spoon, Sea witch/medium ballyhoo or Ilander Large Ballyhoo are the primary baits. All of these baits will catch tunas of all flavors, large Mahi, Wahoo and an occasional Mako
We run our downriggers with heavy (400lb) mono
As far as bars, forget it!
You will never keep them on the clips with all the drag of a bar.
Now trolling live or dead bait like Pogies, mackeral, bluefish, i've caught tuna with the down riggers !
