Default Shimano Torsa and Trevala

Here's my dilemma...I'm making a 16 day trip on the Excel and I just purchased a Trevala 80-200 rod with a Torsa 30. The reel is supposed to put out about 34 pounds of drag, and it is without a doubt the coolest little reel I have ever seen! Here's my problem. I set the drag at strike to 15 pounds and pulled on the rod (the reel is spooled with 60 lb power pro). The blank is fine, but at 15 lbs, the power pro is touching the grip.

I can't understand how shimano could do this...how could they advertise this thing to be able to catch all these bruiser yellowfins and have the line touching the grip at 15 lbs???

Now here's my question..do you guys think it would be ok to add another guide just in front of the grip? It would be no problem for me to do, but if any of you guys have ever fished these rods, do you think it would ruin the action?

Thanks in advance..I'm thinking about just going ahead and doing it anyway to see how it comes out. The reel is awesome but I'm not too impressed with the rod so far.

I'm no rod builder but a few of my Trevala rods have line cuts in the grip. The rod is overrated and if you need a rod capable of more, you might go online and look at the offerings from www.anglers-proshop.com -they specialize in that type of tackle exclusively.

Thanks for that site..their stuff looks awesome! The thing is that I really don't think that the rod is over rated because it is strong as all hell...I just think the guides aren't spaced properly.

Have the same rod and it does the same thing with a torium. The first guide is too far away from the reel seat and there isnt enought backbone in that part of the rod.

Also use the same Trevela rod with Torium 30 with 80# PowerPro & never had a problem bringing up some big Groupers. Don't add any guides it might cancel out your life time warranty. Besides I don't think it need additional guides - those rods are incredible..........ICM

After you hook up with your first big fish you will very happy with your setup......ICM
