Default I want a new reel for Casting/Trolling: Suggestions wanted

I want to get a new reel for casting and trolling so I guess I need one with a clicker. The two reels suggested are the Daiwa Luna 300 or the Shimano Calcutta CT400B. I went to Bass Pro Shop, and the clerk suggested the above two reels. He said the Daiwa was a little better for casting, but the Shimano would cast fairly well but it would be better for trolling. Does anyone have any thoughts on these two or have any other suggestions.

Shimano Calcutta: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/st...=SearchResults

I'll be casting for specks, and trolling for rockfish.

Calcutta for your purposes sounds right on (and they are smoooooth casting). I can't even through a small conventional reel but I can throw that thing like a pro!

Good luck with it.

Just recently got a Daiwa Luna 300 and I love it. It is a solid reel, very smooth and casts well--I spooled it up with Daiwa Boat Braid

You have two completely different applications. The 300-400's would be OK for casting but they are not going to cut it when trolling for anything but dink stripers

For stripers (big ones)... I would look at the Calcutta 700s. Great reels! I use a couple of them each time out and they get a workout. Little over kill for specks, but perfect for linesiders. For specks, regular freshwater bass gear works (Curado, or a spinning outfit).

Would the Shimano Calcutta CTE400 do "double duty"? (casting and trolling)

(I don't really want to buy two reels in that price range...ouch!)

Depends what you are going to be trolling with? Are you talking umbrella rigs and bunker spoons? If so, then the 400 might be a little too light. You might however be able to get away with stretch 25s and the like on occasion...

The 400CTE is a great striped bass reel period. Great for jigging, casting, and it can be trolled. In my opinion, go for it! You will not regret it.

Buy yourself an Abu 5500CS Mag Elite for the Specs and a Penn 320GTi for trolling and put the other $150 towards new rods

Dingbat is on the mark. For the money and use, he's on.If you want to just have one new toy, get the 700 calcutta.I have all the above and use the 700 for sail fish dolphin bonita etc. Its more fun to buy new stuff than to just get one for the price of three. Especially when you will enjoy using all of them. They are all good choices. If money wasn't the issue you would not have asked the question, right??Since you don't fish deep water you don't need the major cranking torque of a DEEP SEA reel. Plus the weight of a heavy outfit when they are just school size doesn't make it as much fun.Do it the dingbat way.

Thanks all for the recommendations. I will be buying after Christmas, and it will probably be more than one outfit. (I do have lots of bass fishing stuff, but I am new to the salt water thing.)
