Can you give me some tips on how to find them? I am new to off shore fishing and every thing helps. I have heard that they are near THE POINT. And as I can see you live a long ways from the water like me. I live in Lexington.

I am about 6.5 hrs. away but I fish it pretty often and stay in touch with things. They have been near the point. About 8 days ago they were south of the point around the 400 line but recently I have good reports around the tuna hole and 600 line 100 fathoms. It changes alot but if you look at the SST's and go toward the point and stay away from the strong currents you should hit em on a temp. break. Alot of times you have to wait for the bite. Sometimes all the action will come at the end of the day and other times there is an early bite.
I am about the same time away as you. I have been going out of oregon inlet for about 3 times. Ive hit the mahi once and the tuna none. I have followed the charter boats every time and still no tuna but everyone says the water was too warm so now maybe the water has cooled off enough for me to get lucky. Thanks for the info it is greatly appreciated.
Just follow the charter fleet (at a good distance). Then fish in their general vicinity (not among them!) All the SSTs and fishing forum info. in the world can't compete with the guys who do it everyday (and who stay in touch with the commercial fleet). Yes, you may get lucky, but the odds are with them.
Once you get there, look for birds, breaks, and "nervous water." Fish your rigs long and keep them simple. A few properly rigged ballyhoo behind seawitches pulled way back in some clean water should do the job. You won't see those guys pulling "the Melton Catalog."
Remember, they may still catch fish when you don't. Go down the day before and see what kind of rigs are hanging off of the fighting chairs and in the buckets. A little insight into what is working will go a long way. By the way, the best way to enhance your knowledge is to pay for the education. Charter a boat during a tuna bite. You will learn more in a day than you could learn in a season on your own.
This area is very productivebut can be very dangerous in regards to weather changes (especially this time of the year and on into the winter months. Here are some chart tips for you.
SST of the area. This data is 5 days old but I've posted it to show you how big the temp breaks can be in this area.
That's a good education right there! Don't be surprised if the charters turn NE out of the inlet. There have been some nice eddies up north (800-000's) and many times, they will fish those breaks to the NE in the fall especially. After this wind, who knows what will happen but be cautious of the weather. A lot of folks went out earlier this week on a 3-4ft forecast and experienced 6-10 in the stream. Guys in small boats got their asses handed to them.
Another tidbit, many of the bites (from the folks I know) are coming in the green water (mid 60's) which is near the blue water and they are getting them on the planer with a sea witch ballyhoo combo (pink is a good color for the planer bait). Short of it, don't be obsessed with fishing the blue water...many times you'll get your tuna bites in the green water is it is only laying on top of the nicer water which is underneath...and bait holds thick usually in the green water. ALso, look for the squid boats.
Glenn is right on with his post. As Glenn wrote be very careful around those big temp breaks as the seas have a tendency tostandup around them especially on a W - NNE wind. Additionally, when you get colder air temps associated with winds from the North you can get alot more wind over the gulf stream moving NE along the coast. Air temp -versus - water temp differences make that happen. It's not uncommon to get smoking water in the late fall. If something doesn't fell right in regards to the weather side on your instincts.
Tom,
Your last few posts are some of the most informative I have seen. I fish out of OI alot and enjoyed looking at the pictures and notes you provided. Thanks..
Sure hope the weather man is wrong for next week. I plan to be down there all next week and was hoping to get a out a few days.
bluewaterpirate,
You are the man, thanks for the explanation and pictures. I plan on possible running with a buddy this fall and your post probably cut several trial and error trips out. Thanks a bunch for the post and tips.

Tom,
Do you have the capability to repost these pics with TD lines? I'd like to see that. We have seen the tuna way up the beach around the 800-850 line. Yesterday, they were caught around the 680, about ten miles up from the point.
Here you go ......here are some pics of the TD's in question.
I'mheading out tomorrowat 5am keeping my fingers crossed on theweather. Willpost report tomorrow night or early Tuesday morning. Hope to have pictures of tuna for sure.
These pictures we taken from my Garmin 2206 on my Whaler.
Yep, that's the line but closer in. They were in about 80 fathoms. Thank you. I was wondering if your software will actually display all the TD lines. Mine does not. Good Luck tomorrow. I guess you are going out of Beaufort for BFT??
