Default Fishing from Oregon Inlet

Does anyone know when the yellow fin will be close enough to get to them with a smaller boat out of Oregon inlet?

They don't exactly come in that far. They are generally 35 or so miles out. They are not so much like dolphin in the summer that come closer to the beach. they stay out there where the bait is mixing (the point). Its tough to find a good day for a smaller boat to go out of oregon inlet. it can happen, but its not like you can run 20 miles and hope to get in the yellowfin.

what's your definition of a "smaller boat"? I agree, they do not come in much closer than 30-40 miles with 40 usually being the minimum. Tuna fishing has been POOR down there for some time...everyone is impatiently waiting for them to make a real showing for the Fall.

Good day you'd be fine running offshore in that boat out of Oregon Inlet. I run out of Hatteras Inlet and have caught several tuna inside of 25miles. the largest yellowfin ive caught on my boat was 60lbs and i was 17miles out.

Keep in mind that Oregon Inlet and Hatteras Inlet can get extremely bad in a hurry so you have to pick your days accordingly.

I run a 24 Albemarle and have fished OI and Hatteras. Yes, out of Hatteras you can get them closer but the tuna fishing CAN be more consistent off OI througout a longer season...

Bottom line, look for West or SW winds of 10 knots. 10-15 will be bumpy but surely fishable...5-10 best with mainly w or sw. Any prolonged east or northeast will cause swells to break at OI which you do not want. Hatteras SE winds are the enemy for the inlet.

If you're there for a week you can watch the weather trend and surely pick a nice day....

Good luck

Glenn

I would crawl before id walk, go out of the inlets fish nearshore a few times. Both of these inlets can get extremely dangerous and Glenn is dead on about the winds to fish out of each inlet. I've came through Hatteras Inlet more than once when it was nothing but breakers all the way across and its no fun. If you do come into an inlet when its like this determine the correct line in and once you commit there is no turning back. Pick up a swell and get up on it and be careful not to get to far or youll go down the face which means disaster. But stay on the back of it until it breaks out then after it breaks out run to the next one and repeat the same thing until you are through the rollers. After you get through the rough stuff thank the good Lord and run to the marina.

Falling Tide bucking the wind at OI is nasty! I wouldn't tell anyone new to offshore fishing to go try OI or Hatteras, the weather can change too fast. Even being an experienced offshore fisherman the Weatherman is a liar alot of the time and coming through OI when it gets taller than the top sucks even if you know what your doing.

You need to join the Piedmont Offshore Fishing Club. They meet the 2nd Wednesday of each month at the building to the left of the K&W on bigtree way, just off wendover. There are plenty of guys that fish out of morehead & oi/hatteras. You will get all the help & advice you need. Great club - next months speaker will be mark sosin. New speaker every month. pm me if you need more info.

weve fished off OI this summer. the first day we got out 38 miles, wind was from SW it got so big we couldnt hardly set lines or keep the lines from tangling, we also had the women on the boat so we turned around and the closer we got inshore the calmer it was.
Day 2 , going out the inlet was hairy, steep 8 footers easy, the boats that were running in were sliding down the faces and stuffing it sideways. As soon as we made it out it was flat calm all day. At 29 miles we caught a white marlin and found tuna a little over 30, we just couldnt catch em.

so watch out down there.
