Default avets

tried searching but couldnt find anything so....

i m looking for a new offshore reel. i have internationals 50 n 80's. lately though i ve been using tld 25's and tw 30's. i like the 25 's the best but.....i have been looking at the avets lx with the 6:1 ratio and it is sweet....my question is...is it worth the upgrade for the faster retrieve? i keep thinking about spring and all the weed? also the machined reel excites me....what do you think?

thanks
john

I own two LX's 4:1 and I've fished several TLD 25's.

The TLD's have a higher capacity (more line on the reel) and harness clips. I've caught tuna to 70 pounds with them and I've seen tuna to about 100 pounds caught with these reels.

I have never caught any tuna with my Avet LX's. Just stripers. That having been said, I love the idea of the "all metal not graphite" on the LX's. With 65 pound braid, I don't know how much more capacity I'd need for fish in this class. I wish the LX had harness clips (I know you can get one that you attach in the after market). I'll post up when I get a good sized tuna on the Avets..... or I'll post if I am spooled and crying.

Personally I like the idea of the 6:1 ratio becuase if you get deep into the spool, the retreive rate may be pretty slow due to the very small spool diamter. But I don't expect to be able to crank that fast with a good size fish on the line...

You could always get larger reel handles for your TLD25's. I put T-bar's on mine and it has made a world of difference in my retrieve. They are great reels and as stated, they have far more line capacity than the little Avets. I like the avets a lot as well, but the little ones aren't as well suited to trolling as the TLD25s are.

have you looked at the new HX? I have been using one for bottom fishing and trolling. Strong, nice retrieve, and light.
