Default Canyon Runner Reports w/Pics –(Sept 8-20 - 4 Trips – 65 Tuna & 198# Big-Eye)

September 19-20 - Capt. Mark DeBlasio, Capt. Jerry Lanzeratti and mate Tom Kelly had the Matt Butouski charter out Wednesday to Thursday and ran to the tip of the Hudson looking for a troll bite as he heard some boats had fish in there on their way home before the blow. He found the fish and a big one at that trolling a 198-pound big-eye. He also pulled 3 longfin out of there and was working right at the tip. All the fish including the big-eye was caught on a new spreader bar Mark has been putting through the paces over the last month and is just in love with - a rainbow green machine bar (see picture below).

With an hour before dark he pulled in the lines and ran down to the southwest corner and dropped the hook. They had bait and yellowfin under the boat immediately and by mid-night had decked 17 yellowfin and stopped tuna fishing. Out went the sword baits and they caught 2 nice swords during the rest of the night with a kept and one released.

September 16-17 - Capt. Mark DeBlasio had the Eli Turner charter out Sunday morning leaving the dock at 10am to head to the Hudson Canyon. They ran to the East Elbow and started trolling down the edge working along side Phil and picked 2 longfin at just west of the 100-square. Capt. Mark decided to leave the crowd to themselves at the 100-square and instead set up at the southwest corner and had yellowfin under the boat immediately. They picked hard all night on sardines, jigs and live squid with 9 in the boat by 2am and then a hot bite until morning putting another 8 in the boat before sun-up. They came home with 17 nice 60-80 pound yellowfin on ice.

September 12-13 - Capt. Mark DeBlasio had the John Kolm charter out to the Hudson Canyon on a Weds/Thurs overnighter. Starting the troll around the east elbow, they
broke the ice with a nice longfin before the entire spread was in the water on a Rainbow Green Machine Spreader bar. Trolling down the east wall towards the 100 square produced no more bites before dark. Setting up just east of the other five boats fishing the square, the crew had steady action in 75.5 degree water from 11pm until 3am, putting eight nice yellowfin in the boat on squid and sardines. There was a lull in the action from 3am until 5:30am, then they picked another three fish before going on the troll around 7am. Trolling around the 100 square produced no more bites so they worked up towards the east elbow, finding a huge pod of porpoise just SE of the east elbow. Working the porpoise from the east elbow to the Bombs, the crew picked away at the yellowfin, catching 4 more in the 70lb class, all on Rainbow Green Machine bars. They also had one shot of longfin on ballyhoo, going one for three. They ended the trip with 13 yellowfin from 50-75lbs and four longfin in the 30-50lb class.

September 8-9 - Capt. Mark DeBlasio took the Adam Horton charter out Saturday to Sunday as they were flexible enough to reschedule their Sunday/Monday trip a day earlier to avoid the approaching weather. And it was a good thing they did as they put together a nice catch. Leaving later Saturday they did not get on the hook until 9pm at the South Toms Canyon. They had fish soon after they loaded the boat with live squid put a few in the boat before mid-night and ending the night with 11 for 15 on nice big 70-85 pound yellowfin. In the morning not needing to come home they stayed the day and trolled all the way up the edge to the Hudson where they picked away at longfin for a couple hours putting 3 in the boat. They stopped right there and put another half dozen tilefish in the boat to finish out the day.

Nice work on the Eye. It seems like more and more swords are being caught too. Way to go.
