How much does it cost to charter a boat like this? The price has to be cranked up, compared to a 'normal' boat don't you think? There is a huge difference in initial cost between a multimillion dollar bad ass boat like this and the average charter you would see at the docks.

When not screaming back from Bermuda, do these high speed, rather large customs have a higher cost of ownership than a more 'production' boat like a Viking, or other hull?

I'm just curious, not in the market. So all you boat brokers, please don't start cold calling me.

other than the initial purchase price, the annual cost to operate a 60' Spencer is no different than running a 60' Hatt or Viking. and the intital purchase price isn't always substancially greater for one of these customs. engines are the big price points, moving from 1400 to 1850hp can add a few hundred grand to the price. also, custom built also tend to be subject to the owner saying "while your at it" a lot during the build process. that adds up quickly.

Seatoy and the Pelican are always at the top in Billfishing. We see them out on the water all the time. Nothing like cruising back in in a CC and watching one of these boats cruise right on by. Great captains ......Mark

I agree, both are great captains. Barry Sawyer, "First Crack", also out of Pirates Cove, is also top notch and there's not a better tuna fisherman anywhere.

That would be one heck of a ride!

While heading to the inlet in June we were running 26kts from the S and a 60' was coming in from NE, a 21cc running solo behind us decided he was going to get ahead of him before the inlet. This 60'r passed a 45' like it wasn't moving so I just watched. All I could say was I hope the inlet is in good shape cause that guy isn't backing down. Then when I get to the short cut, ITS LOW TIDE and they both went the long way around. Now I know the cc isn't local and didn't realize the speed of some of the big boats. About 2m before Wanchese the cc finaly gave up and pulled over on the smooth sound water. I bet he never tries that again, just hate I didn't get pictures, he was right on top of him! After Wanchese he backed down with heavy boat traffic and dolphin watching boats before PC or I would have pulled over as I top out at 37kts on a good day.

This is a pic of us running home one day to Oregon Inlet and getting passed by one of the sporties. We were running at about 34 mph, and he overtook us and went right on by. The speed of the charter fleets at OIFC and PC is just amazing sometimes. You don't expect a 60' sportie to pass a CC like that

Crazy, man!! I remember a number of years ago, Jim Smith built a 57 express with big Lugger engines and a ton of fuel specifically for an owner who allegedly wanted to make that Outer Banks-Bermuda run on a semi-regular basis. I think that the range at economy cruise was in the 750NM range on internal fuel, but obviously it wasn't as fast as that new Spencer. those original Lugger engines were HEAVY and slow, but ridiculously efficient. Garlington claimed 1 NMPG or a hair better at 25-26 knots for the 44 Express' which had the 480-490hp Luggers. You basically got the fuel economy of a 430hp Cummins but with more torque and and extra 50-60hp.

The 57 Jim Smith is just about fully restored from one end to the other. She gets a pair of C15's this winter. Will try to post some pictures when I figure out how to do it. She is a totally different Smith. Two years at Bayliss and she is better than new... She runs, with the Lugers at about 24K slow cruise at an honest 38gph.. Fast cruise is about 27K at 43gph. Top end is 30k. The C15's should really wake her up...
