Default Avet 30/2 or 4/02

I bought both off of E Bay and trying to figure out which one to keep for my son who is left handed as are both reels . Trying to decide between the Pro EXW 4/02 and the Pro EX 30/2. One I will keep and the other will go to a friend who wanted me to pick him up a lefty reel. Would only be used for trollin the Ches. Bay and going off shore a few times per year. What are some of the advantiges of one over the other?

The 30/2 is a more modern design and will produce much more drag. With that said, the 4/02 is a great reel, and capable of some good drag with a small mod. They will both fish 60-80 lb line NP, so, probably both are "more" reel than you need for the application.

You can go to avetreels.com and look at the specs. Both are fairly comparable. The 30/2 is the newer version and they are not producing the 4/02 anymore. Personally I would keep the 30/2.

I would definitely keep the 30/2. I own a 40/2, love the reel and have caught a four tuna on it, but the auto-clicker-disengage can be almost dangerous if you bump the handle while chunking or livebaiting. And it would be really nice to have a button to push before going into full - past strike, for newbie friends on the boat. I believe Avet fixed both these problems on the 30/2 plus added more drag. My 40/2 will get 35 pounds at full, perfect for 80lb, but I have to baby-sit it all day so my friends don't screw anything up.

i haven't played with any of the 30 two speeds, but i've serviced a bunch of ex 4/0 two speeds. they can be hotrodded to deliver 30-35# of drag at strike before losing freespool. that makes the 4/02 a righteous 100# reel is a 4/0 package. too bad it's been discontinued......

The 30 will do it all and would be the reel I would also take if I was going on a trip for larger fish.
