I never have any luck when using Circle hooks for bottom fish - use them exclusively in the surf with good results.........ICM

I use Circle Set hooks from Penn for your average Red Snapper 5/0's work fine on Grouper if your live baiting you might have to upsize them....

If your Beeliner fishing drop down to 3/0's or smaller remember when you feel the Tug Tug Tug you simply lift and reel ....

What I like is see the offset eye you can snell them and get a direct pull on the point to drive it home .....

8/0 and 10/0 for grouper and I will use 5/0's if I am targeting smaller fish.....but we catch alot of the smaller fish on my dedicated grouper rigs. I never use anything but circles bottom fishing. They really helps out when rookies are along because they don't have to read any strikes or set hooks......just hold on until the rod bends. I use Mustads or Eagle Claw Circle Seas.

I just about exclusively bottom fish in the same waters and use 4/0 and 5/0. I have had great success with red hooks and like the Gamakatsu Octopus Circle the best.

With new limits you have to target other species, as previously stated go smaller for trigger and beeliners - I use same hook in 1/0 or 2/0.

There doesn't seem to be any agreement as to size of Circle hooks among hook manufacturers. I've used size 12/0 Mustads style #39960D (used to be 39960ST) for over 50 years for big Snapper and all Grouper. I go with the same style hook in 14/0 for Tarpon and size 20/0 for Jewfish.

I like the 39952BLN in 5/0-8/0 on "Chicken Rigs" for Snapper.

The 9175 "J" hook and the Mustad Sheepshead hook are deadly on Triggerfish on Chicken rigs. Circle hooks are not very efficient on nippers like Sheepshead and Triggerfish. Curved in points don't work as well as straight points, at least for me.

What we use on the charter boat, and I use personally on the rare occassion I get to fish for myself:

Live bait for AJ, Snapper and grouper - Mustad 39960D 11/0 - tried 10/0, but, had more hook ups with 11/0. Will use 12/0 if the baits are exceptionally large

Triggerfish & Beeliners - Mustad 39950BK 4/0 - These are the black demon circle hooks. I had a friend give me 50 of these to try on our bottom rigs (Capt. Ken's chicken rigs) I have been pleasantly surprised and will be going exclusively to these.

Now, I still have people who think you can only fish with J-hooks, so, for these folks I do keep on hand the old tried and true.
Honestly, it is hard to beat the Mustad 3467 #4 sheepshead hook for triggers and beeliners (and yes, sheepshead too).

The owner of the MAR-T still likes the double snelled hooks rig for snapper fishing (sow rig), so I keep a few Mustad 9174 in 5/0 and 4/0 for him and the others who refuse to learn to use circle hooks.

I have faith in Mustad from years of using them. I have had issues with other brands and sizes, so, from my personal experience, the hooks mentioned above work very well in the Gulf of Mexico the way I rig and fish them. I also really like the Penn 7/0 & 8/0 red circle hooks which I believe are actually made by Eagle Claw. The color doesn't attract me so much as they are scary sharp. I like them using smaller live baits as their sharpness and smaller diameter make it easier to hook the baits and the bait stays alive longer.

I use 10/0 Owner SSW circles for grouper with live pogies and hard tails. I move down to 8/0 when using cigar minners (live or dead). I have started using the Owner Super Mutu 11/0 for live B-liners (1-2 lb) when fishing in 250 for large Gaggs. We use Owner #1's and 2's for triggers and small snappers.
