| | Re: What size Circle Hooks
What we use on the charter boat, and I use personally on the rare occassion I get to fish for myself:
Live bait for AJ, Snapper and grouper - Mustad 39960D 11/0 - tried 10/0, but, had more hook ups with 11/0. Will use 12/0 if the baits are exceptionally large
Triggerfish & Beeliners - Mustad 39950BK 4/0 - These are the black demon circle hooks. I had a friend give me 50 of these to try on our bottom rigs (Capt. Ken's chicken rigs) I have been pleasantly surprised and will be going exclusively to these.
Now, I still have people who think you can only fish with J-hooks, so, for these folks I do keep on hand the old tried and true.
Honestly, it is hard to beat the Mustad 3467 #4 sheepshead hook for triggers and beeliners (and yes, sheepshead too).
The owner of the MAR-T still likes the double snelled hooks rig for snapper fishing (sow rig), so I keep a few Mustad 9174 in 5/0 and 4/0 for him and the others who refuse to learn to use circle hooks.
I have faith in Mustad from years of using them. I have had issues with other brands and sizes, so, from my personal experience, the hooks mentioned above work very well in the Gulf of Mexico the way I rig and fish them. I also really like the Penn 7/0 & 8/0 red circle hooks which I believe are actually made by Eagle Claw. The color doesn't attract me so much as they are scary sharp. I like them using smaller live baits as their sharpness and smaller diameter make it easier to hook the baits and the bait stays alive longer.
