Default Line counter's

Does anyone use line counters? Do you have a reel that supports it or a clip on type..

http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/te...jpg&hasJS=true

Wondering if it's worth it.. Thanks!

I use the el-cheapo rod clip on's from Shakespeare. They work good with my braid equipped downrigger rods.

They work OK on smaller rods and reels but not on larger trolling setups. The line clip is too low to the rod and you have to mount the counter way out on the end of the rod to get it too work right and then you can't read it.

Cabelas has a combo with counters that I use. I really like them and even use in salt water. Just make sure you oil and clean them every so often.

I use the okuma line counter reels and they get the job done on the great lakes fishing dipseys down to 70 feet.

Shorty: Does your line counter have a level wind as well? I saw one of these reels at a show and really liked them. I'd have to see them side by side with the
Penn 320GT2 to see which feels better..

Which one do you have? You feel they are better than Penn?

I have 4 okuma 30d's and 4 older penn mag 10's that arent line counters and feel that the quality is comparable but remember that I am only catching 5 to 15 pound fish on these and dont know how they would hold up to heavier fish battles. I dont know what fish you are targeting so keep that in mind while buying.

I guess I have to ask why you need a line counter. As long as you have a LW you shouldn't need a line counter. On a Penn GTI 330 or a Penn 309, each time the LW pawl crosses the reel face is approximately 10'. We usually count distance in “bars”.

Well I guess its because we are letting out about 5 or 6 rods at a time when setting up and we just put it in a holder and let line pay out until it gets to the point you want it, anywhere between 100 and 270 feet where we fish here. The wife or kids watch it and stop it where needed. Just makes it easier thats all......The reels without counters get used as downriggers rods...Its the norm here on the great lakes.
Hope this makes sense to you,,im not a very good xplainer.....

I pull 10 lines so I know where you are coming from. Like I said, all we do is count bars. If I want the line out 170' it's 17 trips of the LW pawl across the reel and we are there.

Thats how we used to do it dingbat,,count the wraps...This just frees you up more to let other lines out and not have to stand and watch..

Okuma Magda 45DX is close to the Penn 320. I have used this reel for trolling stripers. Nice to have the line counter at times. Bought another 45DX last week. Time will tell if it holds up in salt water. I know they are used alot in Great Lakes fishing.

These Shakespeare's aren't bad. They come in handy for tuna chunking trips.
