RE: Flying Gaffs ?????? I don't like the looks of it, and here's why:
1) 5/8" seems big but they don't mention any heat treating.
2) Turning it on a CNC lathe sounds cool, but I prefer cut points: you'll need to sharpen it at some point, and they penetrate better through bones than conical points.
3) The handle seems wimpy: small diameter and kind of thin walls. For comparison I have an old Accurate flygaff handle that is pretty burly, it is about 1.5" diameter and heavy (I don't know how thick) with the socket welded on and machined to hold the hook. Nothing to come loose, and the only plastic part is a butt with a groove so it won't spin in rod holders.
Perhaps I expect too much, but I have a 6" Accurate flygaff hook that a 300 lb thresher straightened out (not green and not even a monster), so strength matters a lot to me. I don't remember if the stock on that Accurate hook was 1/2" or 5/8" but it wasn't one of their forged ones. I'd hate to have any doubts in my equipment when the fish of a lifetime comes alongside. If you are ever going to try to boat something really big, I'd be looking at Aftco (although there are other premium ones; and nothing wrong with the forged Accurates if you can find one, but they stopped making them a while ******.
