At the request of many - Tech Tip#1 Trolling Old Salty Planers
To ALL,
We have had several inquiries on how to troll Old Salty Planers, be it small planers, hand-line/release planers, downrigger planers, or the NEW Planer Rod.
Well here you go, we will postseveral Tech Tips in a row.
Starting with small Old SaltyPlaners. #1 & #2 Old Salty Tech TipsWe hope you enjoy, diagrams compliments of Andaman AndyGood Fishin'Team Old Saltyhttp://www.oldsaltytackle.com
Micro DFA Tuna Line.
I have used this rig with great effect on Skipjacks, small black fin & Small YFT.
This rig is Killer on smaller size tuna and you maybe surprised at what else chews on it!
First we need a 30-50lb trolling rod to handle the planer without bending to much, I would also recommend 50lb line for the Old Salty #1 you can go lighter but it just takes out the risk in case a slob hits it.
Braid is also good as you will get more depth but can be hard to level wind when you have the of meat on.
Join the line direct to a 135-200lb snap swivel as a double line will add drag and rob you of depth and will also possibly hum, the snap then connects to the planer tow eye.
The tuna line is made up of 20-30ft of 100-150lb mono with a 135lb snap swivel at the planer end, and a 3 - 4.5 inch squid skirt at the business end spaced with beads (I would recommend one big one to start and fill the head of the skirt and smaller ones after to position the hook.) then two more squids spaced roughly 3 -4ft apart by a crimp or a using a dropper knot, these can also have hooks in if smaller bait sized tunas are expected otherwise leave them hook less.
Hooks are up to personal preference but I would use a 3/0 – 6/0 3407ss Mustad.
Different rigs can be made up and stored on plastic leader wheels if you want to change colour size etc. and quickly changed out.
To deploy the rig I just let the tuna line over the side with the rod in the holder and a small amount of drag on, when the line is out and the planer is still at the rod tip I then pickup the rod and free spool it back a short ways then engage the drag.
If the planer has not set I simply raise the rod to the 12 o’clock position then quickly snap the rod down to the horizontal this will set the planer (a 7ft trolling rod will help you here but not crucial) this takes a few goes to get right but when you have it mastered it will become second nature.
Some times a fish may hit the hook less lure and trip the rig, always keep checking the angle of the line to the water for this, but if it does happen just reset the rig as described above.
Position will depend on size of boat and personal preference but I tend to fish it close to the boat.
This is a good way to get into planer fishing without spending “Big bucks” but I am sure once people that have never tried this, they will go on to the bigger setups.
Ok good luck, tight lines and don’t forget to post any pictures of the results!Attached Images __________________

I think it's kind of proper etiquette that if you are going to do nothing on this board but push the products you sell, you need to pay the man that runs the site.

Exactly.
2 posts in a row advertising. Be cool dude, contact Wiley as this is unkosher, and it says so down at the bottom by the "Submit" button.
RE: At the request of many - Tech Tip#1 Trolling Old Salty Planers
Hello,
I have contacted Wiley a few times.
Yesterday was one of them as a matter of fact.
I didn't mean no harm, I've had several e-mails
about the hull truth, and if we had tech tips, and videos.
Please post them up here, so guys can see how to troll
Planers several ways.
Sorry for any misunderstanding.

Old Salty is always welcome here in my book. Best planers made. As far as I know, the only one still made in the USA!
Plus the pull better and trip better than the competition. They are the foundation of the Bridle-less planer rig.
Bring on the Tips!
No one is discouraging him from displaying his wares like you with your signiture lines, but that's really Wiley's decision as he pays the bills unlike you or I.

Excuse me officer etiquette but I just don't see where he's " doing all this product pushing "? Seems like he's meeting the demand of questions on planers and certainly appears to know what he's talking about.
Re: At the request of many - Tech Tip#1 Trolling Old Salty Planers
You guys bashing Team Old Salty LAY THE HECK OFF!! HE is not "pushing" his products. The techniques described can be used with any brand of planar. He has expressed willingness to be a THT sponsor. What more do you want? I, for one, welcome the free knowledge. When you are just getting started like I am, a post that teaches planar basics is worth its weight in gold. I feel like I'm bothering the more experienced guys when I ask questions about basics, and I really appreciate it when someone takes the time and energy to take us through this stuff.
I am sorry if I seem rude here, but if you guys cause him to simply discontinue posting, that's a big loss for me and many other beginners.
To Team Old Salty, I have PMed you, and please don't let these guys get to you. There are many others who sincerely appreciate your efforts.

Know what your throwing before you pitch it.
Officer etiquette... that's cute
I was drawn to the thread since it said "at the request of many..." and didn't recognize the user. Saw that he had a total of 7 posts and they were all about his planers. Got nothing against the man or his product (pretty sure the planer sitting on my boat is an old salty). Just wanted to give him a heads up that if he is only going to talk about his product, he will get frowned upon by the moderator and, more importantly, the community, without paying to do it. Ask nautic star. Sounds like he already knew that and already tried to make arrangements. Welcome to the site salty.
So yes, "I knew what I was throwing when I pitched it".. another cute one. Very clever.

Re: At the request of many - Tech Tip#1 Trolling Old Salty Planers
The issue about what is a spam post and what is a legitimate post providing good info can be somewhat gray.
At first blush the initial post does seem like a spam because it is Old Salty's first post and he is pushing his product
Most members are aware that THT remains operational because Wiley collects fees from sponsors aka equipment manufacturers and retailers . . . thus they note spammers and make them aware of the rules . . . I disregard those who make remarks about policing as they may not know the whole picture
Old Salty is welcome (I use their stuff) but they should have contacted Wiley first and gotten his OK or made formal arrangements to become a sponsor
If Old Salty is new to promoting their products on sites like THT then they made a legitimate slip and have now contacted Wiley and things should be OK
I hope that Old Salty sees the value of THT . . . but remember that Wiley is human and he is not on the board 24 - 7 to respond to all info requests in micro-seconds . . . be reasonable
- - -
By the way . . . there are as many as five new spammers per day . . . those that help identify spammers for Wiley are doing a service to THT so please get off of their case
Have great day . . . hope Old Salty becomes a sponsor . . . I could have used their info a couple of years ago
RE: At the request of many - Tech Tip#1 Trolling Old Salty Planers
To ALL,
We think The Hull Truth is an awesome sight.
We've had several e-mails in the past year to join the sight and become a sponsor.
Being boat owners ourselves and experienced fishermen, we think this is a great place for us to be.
We are willing to share our knowledge in trolling Planers, be it
mini planers
hand line planers
Downrigger trolling
or High Speed trolling.
We're certainly not trying to spam THT, so for those of you that think we are.
You're totally wrong.
I hope this clears things up here.
We look forward in reading new posts here, as well as the boaters forum.
PMs are always welcome our way, for those of you that would like to learn
the tricks of trolling planers.
Good Fishin' to you ALL,
Pro Staff - Team Old Salty

Salty, thank you for the helpful info. Don't worry about the A$$HOLES on here that feel some sort of entitlement to watchdog this site against anyone they feel to be promoting self interest, which is exactly what 90% of the posters do here anyway.
Just when a knowledgeable representative of a product takes the time to help a person learn and succeed, they crucify him. IMHO move on to the more appreciative audiences that are out there, don't waste your breath on a guy with a clamp on rod holder on his Sundancer, that calls himself a fisherman. I enjoy using your product, and through experience, realize that they are something which requires somewhat of a learning curve and instruction to be successful, thanks for the time.
Get a f-ing life you 10000 post morons who clearly have nothing better to do at 3am than police the web for possible advertising atrocities. Stick to sitting at the dock with your humus and box o' wine, tend to the the tomato plants on the finger dock, and leave the fishing to us. You are giving the sport a bad name.

I think anyone that has a product and wants to share something that might help the user should be welcome. I think more companies should help out with the use of a product. Personaly Old Salty planers are the only ones I use and think it is a good product. We use them in a different fashion but there are 100 ways to skin a fish!! Thanks for the insight.....................Mark
PS....I need about a dozen more planers 4-16 !!! They are hard to find in NC!!!!!
Re: At the request of many - Tech Tip#1 Trolling Old Salty Planers
Well, he might have meant humus. Maybe a NY/NJ variety of shiat? I'm not sure if that would call for a red or white in that box of wine.
Humus. n.
A brown or black organic substance consisting of partially or wholly decayed vegetable or animal matter that provides nutrients for plants and increases the ability of soil to retain water.
