My fishing season in Alaska officially ends Sept 18, 2007.
At that point I need a break from fishing - so I AM GOING FISHING!
I have a few destinations in mind already. I am looking for warm weather and ACTION (fish and other kinds).
So, there you have it. Let's hear it!
Oh yeah, I live most of the year in Louisiana and fish Venice, and Grand Isle on the regular. Also, most of FL is out for me. So, looking for more "exotic" ports of call.
BULLSHIPPER, I surely hope you'll chime in on this.
And I won't be making reservation til Mid-May or Early June if it's a place that books up way early.
Re: Best offshore fishing in warm climate Sept-Oct???
Thanks guys and keep it coming!
787337 - Hurricanes I know about - I'm from New Orleans and lost most everything in Katrina. They don't bother me much anymore (it's only stuff, I can get more stuff).
RE: Best offshore fishing in warm climate Sept-Oct???
Hop on a long range trip out of San Diego and head down the Baja coast for Big tuna, yellowtail wahoo etc. 5or 6 day down to Quadalupe island that time of year can be awsome.
Re: Best offshore fishing in warm climate Sept-Oct???
I would look into St. Thomas at that time. Its their peak for blues. Most are not that big, but you should get good numbers with a few big fish out there.

If money is no object - Then it has got to be CAIRNS, AUSTRALIA...
At that time of the year it is smack in the middle of the season for black marlin at the edge of the barrier reef. One of the greatest if not the greatest marlin fishery in the world with fish ranging from 150 to 200 lb frisky males which are insane when pitched with baits on lighter stand up tackle to the giant 1000 lb class females that test the very best marlin anglers on the heaviest of heavy tackle.
Inshore/light tackle fishing is outrageous with kawa kawa similar to little tunny, a variety of mackerels including what the locals call Spanish mackerel (Pacific version of the king mackerel that tastes as good or better than a wahoo), different species of jacks, wahoo and yellowfin tuna in the 8 to 30+ lb class needed every morning for fresh marlin BAIT. Wahoo and Spanish mackerel get huge and so does the giant trevally aka Ulua which is a cult fish to Hawaiian shore casters and Japanese casting fanatics who go there specifically to target them on surface worked lures. If you are on a live aboard charter (highly recommended to take you to follow the best locations up and down the reef) there is excellent reef fishing for a variety of great tasting critters at night if you're not already knocked out.
The hospitality and big fish experience of the Australian crews is second to none and the location is mind blowing. Coral reefs, protected turquoise inshore anchorages, incredible snorkelling. Just give the stingrays a wide berth (grin) and you'll be fine.

Closer to the USA you may want to consider Costa Rica, you need to do your research as parts of the coast fish better at different times but if it's action you want you'll find it there. Nice size sails and big dorado or if that's too easy, you could target blue or black marlin or the cow YFT in the spinner dolphin schools, YFT to 352 lbs have been boated in CR in previous seasons. Plus I hear the land action with the Chicas ain't half bad either...
Re: Best offshore fishing in warm climate Sept-Oct???
Patudo - you da man!
That's what I'm thinking, FISH AND CHICKS . . . and no crabs . . . hehehe.
The long range out of san Diego is a good idea but no women probably. I even know the guys that had Top Gun 80 built, but I need some action besides fishing.
Okay, so far I'm leaning towards PV and will look into CR as well. Anything else like Panama hittin' that time of year?
Thanks and keep those ideas coming fellow anglers!
P.S. I'm going solo so if there's somebody out there lurking in this thread with the idea of doing the same thing I will split a charter boat with you (as long as you're not crazier than 9 out of 10 voices in my head).
Re: Best offshore fishing in warm climate Sept-Oct???
Panama could be good and also Venezuela in the autumn is renowned as Grand Slam City. The Venezuelan mates are slick as hell working with ballyhoo baits and light tackle. If you keep your eyes open you'll learn a ton about how to bait, hook and fight white marlin, sailfish and red hot 150 to 300+ lb blues on 30 lb stand up tackle (yes that's pretty much all they fish with over there, even for blues). You'll also have to fend off big dorado, black fin tuna and yellowfins. I don't know if the 150 to 200 lb plus scimitar finned beasts are there all year round but believe me you don't want to hook anything that big on 30 anyway. On shore I am told that the land fishing for Chicas is pretty hot with lots of 90 to 120 pounders (Grin)
