I caught a large cobia last year. Asked him how old he was, he said 72. I didn't belive him though, his story sounded fishy to me.

Sorry but it's a slow day here at work.

He was lying. Should have asked for some ID. Cobs don't live much older than 15-20.

Wacked the 1st big red drum I caught back in the 70's & kept the ear stones (otoliths). Couple of years ago had one of them cut & aged. 44"FL fish that was 41 years old.

A sturgeon oyside of Winnipeg . . . guide estimated age, based on size and girth, at about 60 to 70 years of age

How can you ever believe a fish? They never even know what they are going to be 'til they near the surface. Does catching million + yr old sharks teeth count?

I keep trying to count the rings in the filets but I lose count and end up just eating it.

Caught an 80# black drum a couple years ago. The Georgia DNR took him to study. They thought he may have been as old as 60. Turned out to be @35 years old. Would have released him but the leader got wrapped in his gills and killed him. One ugly nasty fish.

I normally don't ask for ID unless they appear close to 18.

A bone inside his ear records age like the rings on a tree does.

a few 60 + codfish I've caught over the years probably had a few years under their belt. I didn't ask though.
