Default SOLO GAFFS and FLYING GAFFS - FEEDBACK

Anybody using SOLO gaffs or FLYING gaffs?

Im looking for feedback.

What sizes are you using?

Pros?

Cons?

Im really interested in the flying gaffs. They have a patented mechanism that I've heard is great.

OK I am confused. Solo Gaffs? Flying gaffs have a detachable head with a rope to the head. Generally used for Sharks since they roll and twist when stuck. Even a 100 Lb shark can make a pretzel of a straight gaff (is that what you mean by solo?).

I use Aftco 6' with 5" Gap straight gaffs for Tuna, and have Aftco 5" and 7" flying gaff heads as well. You stick the shark (or big tuna), the head comes off and now you have it by the rope (sounds easier than it is).

straight gaffs have there purpose as do flying ones both vary in size for your targeted fish. i have tried to stay away from flying gaffs since the day one came flying back at the boat. personally, straight gaffs and a harpoon. the only drawback to a stick is there not allowed in tournamenets.

I had a Solo flying gaff w/ a 6" pin, once had a hard time getting the pin to release freom the handle in a PISSED 325 Mako - snapped the handle as everyone was taking cover. After that I switched to Reliable. Not even sure if they are still around. Have not bought a flying gaff in 15 years.
