When you put tension on the line DO NOT use gloves. Buy/make a line spooler and put the tension on the spool. Using gloves is very bad for the line. 20-25 is excessive. It has to be enough to keep the line fro digging in. Every 100 feet of so I go back and forth across the reel a couple of times. When you crank your lines in at the end of the day they are not under 20-25 pounds of drag and I have never had a big tuna bury the line.

stuman - 3/13/2007 11:36 PM About how much spool tension do you guys use spooling 30 class reels for stream trolling? Using 40 lb momoi diamond. thanks
Do you mean when you are spooling new line onto a reel . . . or the drag to be used when trolling?
DO NOT ADD FRICTION TO MONO LINE WHEN SPOOLING!!!! Buch of idiots... Look, if you want some tension, drop the spool in a 5 gal bucket of water and wet pack it. That is my suggestion, or better yet...take it to a real offshore equipment dealer and have them do it (not some discount chain store with some kid behind the counter selling paintball guns)...a real shop.
This home made spooler replaced the pencil, I can adjust the tension to a couple lbs. On braid I try to put about 4 pounds. On small reels and spinners,(braid) I just overfill them a little and when I am on the lake,I let out all the line and wind it back in at about 10 mph. This wet packs it real well.
