I know this has zero to do with fishing, but I was astounded as I read this story.
Hunters.......may want to chime in.
From start to finish, this seems very unsportsman like to me. I could be wrong, but never once in this short article was someone shocked what this man did.
Read the ending of what he did with this animal, after killing it.
It just maybe me...I'm no tree hugger. But I'm also a "for live and let live" kinda guy, one way or another......
Re: Unsportsman like conduct on a massive scale....
He should have donated it. I don't have a problem at all with killin it. Glad he did it. Just hate to waste all the BACON. That could have fed some prisoners bacon for a year. I'd hate to hit something like that in a car. BIG PIG!
Re: Unsportsman like conduct on a massive scale....
I certainly wouldn't call the guy a hunter, by any stretch of the imagination..
Can't imagine the meat wouldn't have been absolutely great if the critter had been bled out properly and then butchered, instead of being left to rot hanging in the sun.
RE: Unsportsman like conduct on a massive scale....
I'm not sure that a wild hog of that size would be worth eating. There are a lot of wild hogs in Alabama and if people want one to eat, they usually kill the smaller ones or trap a small one and put it in a pin so that it can be feed and slaughterd later.
Re: Unsportsman like conduct on a massive scale....
I aint anti-hunting, for sure. I have killed feral pigs and javalina with arrows. But something about this whole thing just wasnt right, and I aint sure what it was. I never hunted anything I didnt plan to eat, or give to someone who wanted to eat it (about a thousand bluefish come to mind, and a whole lotta ducks, for example). If this thing was a nuisance or dangerous, why didnt the farmer shoot it? Not right to kill something just because you can, then bury a thousand pounds of meat...probably 600 pounds butchered? seems wrong.
Re: Unsportsman like conduct on a massive scale....
some ignorant redneck loaded up his rifle and killed it just to do it. it is wrong, that is why there will be no wildlife left. cut the head off and froze it, and burried the rest. what a joke

Re: Unsportsman like conduct on a massive scale....
Hey lighten up nothing wrong with killing a wild hog. They are a nuisance and can be dangerous. Animals that have lost fear of humans are the most dangerous to have around your house. I agree he should have given the meat away while it was still edible. Big hogs in the 400 lb range anyway are plenty tender and tasty.
RE: Unsportsman like conduct on a massive scale....
it was a 1100 pound boar hog.meat is not worth eating.can you imagine the food it would take to feed that thing.to big to breed most other hogs as he is much bigger.worthless he did the right thing.will make a nice mount
Re: Unsportsman like conduct on a massive scale....
Tommy is right. The prisoners could sue you for trying to feed them that meat. I have cooked meat off a 200 pound boar at the request of some hunters and it just wasn't worth the effort in my opinion, even after 48 hours of marinading.
Re: Unsportsman like conduct on a massive scale....
Feral hogs/pigs are becoming an increasing problem in our state. Not saying that killing the beast was ok, but wild ones are becoming an increasing nuisanse all over the south as they adapt to so many different habitats well.
Re: Unsportsman like conduct on a massive scale....
What would you do if your young child or children were playin in the yard and it attacked them??It was a wild hog in a civilized area Besides that it's the other white meat

RE: Unsportsman like conduct on a massive scale....
Being one who only believes in catch/shoot and consume, I can't argue about this one. Unfortunately a hog that size can cause some damage... to one's property and children. If it lost all fear of humans then guess what... it'll trample your 3 year old child.... then what?
A pig that old has terrible meat. It probably is infested with parasites that multiply and grow as the animal gets older. Wanna eat a nice slab of tapeworm infested meat Guess not... I wouldn't. Thats one trophy i'd like to have.
Re: Unsportsman like conduct on a massive scale....
Personally I would have killed it twice....and I don't have kids. What if my rods were out in the yard drying off and it was gonna scratch them!!!??!!!????

Re: Unsportsman like conduct on a massive scale....
As stated a wild hog that has lost its fear is dangerous. They can have explosive attitudes. Not to mention ferol hogs can do a lot of property damage. I use to be a Resource Officer and you can not give meat to inmates that is not USDA inspected because inmates have sued before. Boar meat on that old pig would not be worth a D@mn anyway....While it sounds barbaric, it was a neccessity in this case.
