Default what circle hook?

for just all purpose trolling pulling medium/small ballyhoo.

I was thinking about eagle claw laser sharp 7/0 L2004ELF in the 7/0. (~17.50 for $50.00. A lot cheaper than stainless mustads!)

Wondering if anyone thought that this hook was not strong enough or if anyone had any better suggestions. thanks

Those are perfect for Sailfish and White Marlin. I'm not allowed to point you to a great video on how to rig them at http://www.sportfishermen.com/movies/fishing_videos/188

#8/0 Eagle Claw L2004EL Circle Hook

Here is one method some use FYI :
Step 1

To begin (assuming you already have a leader ready), Twist the monel onto the circle hook as shown in the picture below.

Very important: twist the wire leaving just enough room so that the loop around the hook slides freely but unable to slip off the hook completely.
Picture

Step 2
Place the circle hook as per picture up against the broken off ballyhoo bill. Place the twisted monel under the bill. Take the end of the monel, poking downward; pierce the center flap or mouth from the top. The monel is now facing down when pulled through. Next, run the monel behind the gill plate over the head and behind the other gill plate. Now take the monel and pierce under the chin upward through the center flap or mouth and finish with tight wraps around the bill.

Step 3
The finished circle hook rig. This method will allow the bait to skip and swim.

Eagle claw 7/0 el .2004 ELF . DO NOT USE OFFSET as these tend to gill and deeper hook have caught up to 70 kg black marlin on 15kg line and the hook has been ok on that line class .. i wouldnt use the 7/0 on any heavier line class tho as it will probably straighten out from the higher drag pressure ... we have found that when u leader a lil marlin still a bit green the extra pressure will straighten out the hook .. for me 7/0 for sails 8/0 for small marlin

If you use any offset hook you defeat the whole purpose of the circle hook and you will gut , snag a fish in the stomach like a regular J - Hook or snag its gills
Dont put so much preassure on the fish when leadering, use the boat to back down on the fish, your hook will not bend then. We are releasing 200lb + Striped marlin with and Eagle claw 8/0 in under 2-3 min and not bending any hooks and 80lb Fluro

Yes agree with the use of non offset circles for the very reason u mention ... when in a tournament and double and triple hookups u need to be able to get the hook out as quick as possible and onto the next fish obviouslly taking the welfare of the fish into consideration as well .. most times is ok we tag the billfish useing windon leaders then remove the hook or cut it short as possible .. . but occasionally for reasons mentioned above we need to leader a green fish .. and we consider it unethical to deliberately bust a leader of once the fish is tagged ...
