Went out on Sunday with my buddy Dan. Target species was kingfish. We dragged some blue runners with no luck. Lots of large 20"+ Spanish Macks though. (they hit Yozuri med sized plugs) He brought along a brand new outfit, Trevala rod with the brand new Avet SX6, spooled with 20# mono. at 113pm I picked up the cell to call home and tell the wife we are headed in, didn't get past the third ring when a very large tarpon hit Dan's new outfit, kingfish rig with a large thread. The fight lasted a bit over 1 hour, got it boatside, got the leader touch and broke it off. Guess I tie a decent king rig. Not a bad fish to break in a brand new rod! We were drift fishing when it hit.
By the way...the drift sock did work to slow my boat to 1.5 mph for trolling, only problem is the steering becomes lots of work. Drift sock off each side to fix?
That's what I used to do...put a drift sock out on each side, with a trip line off the backs of 'em....when a king hits they are easily retrieved, and just lay over the side out of the way.
While I wouldn't endorse tarpon fishing with that Avet/Trevala combo, it dealt with this big fish very nicely. Had to do a mid-fight reel repair also, the reel seat clamp was loosening up, got it tightend up and continued on. Figures the big fish always hits the smallest combo on the boat.
