Not to make you reconsider, but the new Daiwa Tierra gets very good reviews (see TackleTour.com). It is in the $115-130 range.

I'm a diehard baitrunner owner. The baitrunner has other feature's than it's true intended purpose.

In super hot action and the line get's reeled up to far to the rod tip. hit the baitruner and pull out 6in of line, then fire away.

When rigging your line. hit the baitruner and pull out enough line to easily work on it. No open bail and line falling off.

I have 350's ,650's, 3500's, 6500 and 6500B's. I don't own a 4500 model. I've landed 36in and 40in Redfish w/ 10lb test on 3500 many time's.

Love my 4500 Baitrunner, too. We sometimes use it with the downrigger when king mackeral fishing. The baitrunner feature is great for letting out line when lowering the downrigger ball- lots easier than opening the bail on a conventional spinner, and a lot less prone to tangles.

Have been plugging stripers for 45 years. Have a Stradic---hate the drag. Had a Shimano Spheros--hated the bail. Have 3 Okumas, hate all of them. Have 2 Quantum Blue Runner Golds, don't like them. I almost hate to say it, but----I like my Penns! Well, at least I don't hate them! Does anybody make a good spinning reel under $200? (for 17 - 20 lb test pitching plugs 3/4 to 3 ounces)

Default Stradic and Bait Runner

I have used a Stradic 4000FH for year Kayaking in Flordia. I recently sold it on ebay and picked up a Penn Sargus 4000 it is a great reel for the money. I sent you a couple of links where I buy my stuff so you can get a good price on what you are looking for. The Penn is by no means a Shimano Class reel but I love the Sargus. Check out the blog below and the other links are for good pricing.

I've been running an old style Stradic 5000 for 3.5 or so years in saltwater and it's still smooth as the day I bought it.. Can't say as I've seen any adverse effects..
That said, it's my "utility" reel and usually lives on a clunky Ugly Stik.. For my every-day use the Daiwa 2500 Tierra's are super schweet reels when combined with a proper Crucial..
Them big Reds hate it..
..Both respond well to a good post trip rinsing and periodic maintenance.. d:^) Schneeky..

I must be alone in using the Stradic 3000 for reds and trout or whatever bites my line. I use it only in salt water and rinse when I return. Never had a salt problem. I find the drag to be one of the smoothest I Have ever used on a reel that size. I don't like the extra weight and size of the 4000. I got the 3000 over the 2500 because of the extra line capacity, but otherwise it's about the same size and weight. I took it off my ugle stick and put it on a nicer, lighter rod. The ugly stick didn't have the balance for the reel. It was too tip heavy, but still a good rod.

My fishing buddy caught this Mahi in the Keys on his Stradic 2000 which is nearly half the size of the 5000.
Hey HullSlap, Great photos, anyone who's caught a dorado like that knows how strong they are. What a heads up,I thought my 2000 stradic was for little fish! How many of us have been lugging oversize tackle all day? Looking forward to keeping it light. Jon

Caught this red on my Stradic 4000 and 10 lb. PowerPro last week. You may want to consider an Okuma SV-40 as well. Nice reel for the money too.
Nice red,is that a mackrel jig in his mouth? Any bait involved? Thanks, Jon
