Default Costa Del Mar 400 or 580?

Is the difference significant enough to offset the price?

Yes the 580 are remarkable if you do a lot of offshore / inshore fishing where you are focused watching baits or hunting fish on the flats.

I would compare them to other fishing gear where you can substitute a cheaper product and still get the job done, similar to my Van Stahl pliers that I have had for 7 years. But once you have worn them you will never go back, I can’t wait until they have the blue mirror’d 580.

Waiting on green mirror 580's myself. It seems like Costa cant get it together which gives me a bit of cold feet if there is a warranty situation, but I am trying to stick it out because the 580's do make a difference.

I have tried both and went with the 580's - IMO a much better product, if you are using them for fishing not just driving, casual - you will absolutely notice the difference. I have tried many others - blows the others away - maui jims, revo, etc.

The 580 price has been adjusted significantly lower in the past 2-3 months so it is certainly worth the price difference from what I have seen personally as well as my patients that have gotten the 580's.

I have been looking at the 580's in the mid $200 range, while the 400's are exactly half the price. Anyone knows a good site with good deals on these 580's?
Also should I go Green mirror or Blue. I hear the Blue mirrors are not that good on cloudy days.(too dark)

Default RE: Costa Del Mar 400 or 580?

I went with the 580's, and I like them very much. Is the cost worth it, I dunno. I get mine half price

As far as warranty goes, in the past 15 or so years, I have sent two pair back to Costa, each time with a lens broken, that was caused by my negligence. Each time I enclosed a note, asking for a new lens and to be billed accordingly. Both times, I got the glasses back, repaired and cleaned, with a new hardshell case, and NO charge, not even for shipping. That is why I only use Costa Del Mar sunglasses.

I currently have a pair of old Blackfin models that I use for field work when I travel. Seems the box of Cohiba's I also had in my carry on bag shattered one of the lenses. I will be boxing them up and sending to Costa, to have repaired, asking to be billed. It will be interesting to see if they go 3 for 3. Even if they don't, they still have my business.

Nope, I don't work for 'em, not affiliated, no interest other than the fact they have given me great service (even my smileys wear Costas)

costa lot, but worth it

Hey Big Al, how do you get the 50% off, if you are not an affiliated?

I have a friend who is a dealer for Costa. His cost is 50% of suggested retail.

Now, there may be a pricing structure based on volume, I have no idea. My buddy is a small time guy. He actually became a dealer, vending them through his business, just so he could get the glasses at half price!!

No, I won't get ya pair, sorry

His business was wiped out by Katrina, though he has recently finished the rebuil/remodel. I specifically asked him if he was going to continue carrying the Costa's, as my wife is wanting a new pair. He said that the sunglasses were low on his list of priorities in terms of inventory.

Having said that, give me a poke around late Nov, he may them back in stock. You can't expect him to give everyone 50% off, though.

My point exactly, he can't loose money on everybody. I can see no reason in the world for you to mention what kind of deal your buddy gave you on the sunglasses on the WWW. Costa representatives are watching this site and other's like them and pulling products out of accounts that abuse their pricing policies. Your buddy would certainly hate to have his access to a product pulled because you needed to brag about the price you got on sunglasses.

I don't want to derail this thread, but.........

I love my costas, but what's up with their new website?!?!?

Here's the link. http://www.costadelmar.com/index.cfm

Where is the link to their products? I see all the bells, whistles and neat little animations but what about the %$#@*&! product?

Just found the link. "Shades Shack" at the bottom of the page in tan type over a brown background. Also under the compass in the upper right. Not sure why they would bury their product line link like that. Stupid web design IMHO. It looks nice but I should'nt have to look too long to find their core product info. When did a link labeled "PRODUCTS" at the top of the page fall from fashion? Maybe even a pair of sunglasses to click on ........what a concept!

If you didn't know what Costa Del Mar was would you even be able to tell they make sunglasses by looking at the home page?

If want to make a point - speak straight.

Now, It would be most interesting to see how any Costa rep would be able to take my posts and extrapolate who the heck I am talking about. What is really whack is what/how/why you should GAF????

I and my friends have made it many years without your guidance and watching out for us. Thanks for the gesture, but its not needed.

Bragging, hmmm. Would posting a pic of one's boat in one's sig be bragging????????????????

I must admit that after reading the posts above it looks like initially 2020 wanted to get a deal on the sunglasses and Snapper was willing to possibly help.

Then 2020is almost looks like he is a dealer for Costa who was trying to out someone who was undercutting his business and had no interest in buying sunglasses in the first business.

That was my initial thought too.

At any rate, 2020, I'm not going to derail this thread any further.

If you want go toe-to-toe, start a thread in the Bilge and I'll meet you there. I might be able to find where it is.............

Hullslap.... I agree 100% on the website. Just noticed the changes today and sure doesn't appear to be sunglass related.

Snapperhead....no need to resort to name calling. Costa Del Mar is making a very concerted effort to control their product distribution and I know of a account in eastern NC that had the product removed from their store for not following pricing policies. I think it's great your buddy gave you 50% off on sunglasses as that is a great perk for being his friend but I don't think it is appropriate for you to try to determine what a wholesale price on sunglasses is if that is not your business.

Maybe I should take my boat pic out of my sig since that is bragging?????

Costa is controlling distribution alright. I cant get a set of green mirror 580 TP2 from them despite waiting for the past 6+ weeks (and I think they keep them in stock).

I've been waiting about the same amount of time and today found out I will have to wait until the 27th. Maybe they spent too much time on their website.
