170 hours on it now. Left Wiggens Pass and headed out 60 miles, entire trip was 125 miles. Fuel usage at the end of the day was 45 gallons for 2.77 average. 45 gallons in reserve fuel left (carry 90). Cruised back at 45mph, out there at 35mph. Fishing was horrible, schools of bonita and spanish mackeral only. No wind to put up the kite, still on my quest for a Gulf sailfish. Dragged stubby bubblers with hoo's for miles, only large spanish mackerals took em. 60 stinking miles to hit 100 feet of water!
60 miles out and 60 miles back and a total of only 125 miles? Something isn't adding up because you say you were trolling stubby bubblers "for miles"? 1 hour of trolling maybe? Couldn't have trolled too many miles unless you really didn't go 60 miles out.
I think it would be smarter to trailer over the the east side and troll the beach for sailfish than run 60 miles out to 100 foot in the Gulf. Sailfish are usually rare in the Gulf.

Maybe I got real silly and trolled from 55 out to 60 then back to the 55 mark then home.

Your math didn't stump me Lud......sorry about the crappy bite. If it makes you feel any better, the last trip I made was around 250 miles (round trip) and the boat I was on didn't get sh!t until we started bottom bumping. 200 gallons of fuel for bottom fish.......now that sucks since we could have caught the same fish on a 60 mile trip.

Sailfish are not rare on the west side of the Gulf.
I frequently take my Mako 25 seventy miles into the gulf. I also have a kicker motor. Thirty-five miles are my shorter days. I usually burn about 70 gallons of fuel with my F225 on smmoth days, 80 on rough days. The funny thing is that I currently pay about the same for my longer trips as I did in 1996 when I had my Ocean Pro 200. I now use half of the fuel as I did in 1996.
I wasn't trying to rip you or anything, just trying to get a clarification. You said you "ran" 60 miles out, if you had said you trolled a portion of it, I would have understood. Seems impossible to even ask questions anymore without someone getting offended. By your smart remark that you might have trolled from 55 out to 60, still doesn't make sense. That means you trolled a grand total of 15 miles? At sailfish speeds, that means approx 3-4 hrs. I guess it doesn't matter, I am sure you will get pissed off at this post as well.

Yes, it's all me, I apologize. Let me clarify. I did not "run" out either, I was at he helm of my boat, running would usually involve sneakers, heavy breathing and sweating. I trolled for a great portion of he day probably 10-12 miles. I also hit a couple crab pots on the way in for tripletail, which accounts for the "missing" five miles. It is impossible to not to offend everyone, but my skin is thick and nothing really matters to me except for fishing, food, sex, cigars and a bottle of fine scotch. My IQ is rather low so "smart remark" would be the wrong terminology. Nothing makes sense to me either. It doesn't matter and I am not pissed at you. Want to go fishing sometime? You or any other THT member, anytime. If you come out fishing with me I'll let you keep log and do the math too. I just barely passed math and algebra nearly killed me.
THat sure is a long way to get to 100 feet of water. I have to travel 40 miles offshore to get to 100 feet in the area I snapper fish. THis weekend I went tuna fishing out of Venice, 30 miles offshore and 2200 feet of water. It got deep real fast.

During the Memorial Day Sportfishing Magazine Striker Tournament here in New Smyrna Beach, FL- last May 2005 we ran 81 GPS miles out of Ponce Inlet, trolled for 4 hours, and ran back. I can't remember how much gas I used. This past May 2006 we ran 76 GPS miles from Stock Island to The Dry Tortugas, and we trolled off and on when we saw birds both coming and going. I used 96 gallons of gas. At times I was running 35-37 knots. Both trips in a Contender 23T with a single 300 HPDI.

Lud, I know the pain, I ran out to the California, trolled, and bottom fished, only a few small speckled groupa, and a small king we didn't keep. 170 mile round trip 93 gallons.
Don't feel bad, I ran 63 miles out monday, burned 117 gallons and caught one measly skipjack. I also think one cylinder on my 94 200 oceanrunner isn't firing. Still beats working.

Not this year. We saw 4 in one day earlier this summer. No takers though. Couldnt get baits past the Bonito.
I know a local guy who regulary goes 60 miles in a single engine Triumph. Recently caught a 35lb tuna out there. Lots of guys go deep in single engine boats. There just too busy fishing to post about it
