Default Motor hard to start

Andy, I have a 2003 Yamaha carb. 2 stroke that I bought new last year as a leftover. Since the first time out it has been hard to start. It has a manual choke as well as one on the key switch. It takes at least 5 or 6 attempts to get it started, but once it starts it restarts as soon as I turn the key. I have tried different combinations of throttle position, more choke, less choke, no choke, choke with the key switch and nothing helps. When I pump the bulb it doesn't get real hard and feels as though there might be air in the line. I took the fuel line off at the filter on the motor and pumped the bulb. After 2 or 3 pumps I got some fuel, then on the next 4 or 5 pumps only air came out. Then a squirt of fuel then more air. I don't know if this is normal. I would think a steady stream of fuel would come out. The two fuel lines that go to the carbs are always full of gas as is the bowl on the filter.
I checked the motor for spark and that's okay. If there is a problem with the fuel line where do I start looking.
I am at a loss so any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Pro,

Most of the times when a carbed Yamaha 2-stroke has a hard start issue its a fuel issue as in not getting enough fuelfor a cold engine.Whether its a choke plate that is not closing all theway, crap inthe carbs ect.

Does the bulb ever get hard when pumping? What is the physical position of the primer bulb when you are pumping it and what brand is the primer bulb?

When you are starting the engine cold what is the physical postion of the engine? Tilted down all the way or trimmed up some?

Andy

Andy,
The motor is in the down position. The bulb is veritical when pumped and gets hard after 2 or 3 pumps and I checked the choke plates and they are fully closed. The bulb is the one that came with the motor, not sure of brand. I just sprayed some gas directly into the carbs and it started. I let it run for about 5 seconds, shut it down and it resarted instantly. I think it is a fuel problem also. What ever the problem is it has been that way since new.

If you are mechanically inclined, it is not that hard to do. If you have the Yamahaservice manual it is covered in there. If not I can email you a few pages from it for your reference........parts@shipyardisland.com
