Just did my twin Yamaha F115's today. The pics really helped alot. Thanks Andy for the parts and the pics!!!! We did two engines in a little over 3 hours.

1. The tip about the crazy glue on the gaskets worked great, If I had not read that tip I guarantee I would not have gotten the gaskets in place right.....

2. One tip for getting the Key out... Use a little block of brass that you can beat on the key with (its soft and worked great to loosen up a stuborn key way.

3. we used a floor jack and the tilt & trim on the engine to adjust and manipulate the lower units back together with great success. Hand jiggling was getting a bit exhausting and aggrevating but the floor jack and tilt allowed small adjustments and let us get the shifting rod back on before the final bolts were assembled..

Thumbs up Awesome post

i fought and fought step 8--the removal of the SS drive shaft cover; apparently others have struggled with it.....

I pryed and pryed, everytime the cover went up so did the plastic sleeve--making it impossible to get off

I looked at your picture and wham. it hits me.....use the same metal piece from the inside of the water pump cover to hold down that plastic sleeve.

IT WORKED! Water pump replaced!

Thanks!

This thread's great. I'm a newbie here and have just bought myself a new TABS Ocean Series 580 with a F115 so this information will be a great help come summer.

Smile pics for replacement

This was the greatest help to a DIY'er. I have not been able to find the pics on the replacement process. I know it is just basically the reverse of what is here but are there any pics posted yet of the process for putting it all back together? Thanks a million for the help.

My workmate bench / vice came in handy for holding the lower unit.

I used a pair of nipper pliers to grab the 1/2 moon key and banged away until I could pull it out.

Cool Yamaha Overheat Dilemma Need Help

Thanks for the great web site info and pictures on the Yamaha outboard impeller replacement. I followed the steps and picture with great results on the pending problem with my 60hp Yamaha overheating. The impeller was weak and was part of my problem.
After replacement of the impeller w/new kit I still had overheat. Replaced thermostat and most of my overheat is solved at this writing.

Had 2 issues in both replacements:
1st issue- I am not able to get the drive shaft back into the upper spline and not have the gears engaged. Can't find neutral....when I have neutral in the spline gear...can't find forward and reverse. Still puzzled on that. Any help out there?
2nd issue - When I changed out thermostat...broke cover bolt in Aluminum water jacket casing. Drilled out and tried an EZ out...never again...that broke off and talk about a redesign. I think I solved that problem. Won't know until issue #1 is resolved.

Not sure exactly what you are asking, but if it is what gear to have it in when removing and installing, we usually do it in neutral.

Default Water pump replacement

This forum is great. I have a 2001 0x66 250 h,p, yamaha that i'm changing the water pump on. From looking at all the pictures and reading all the threads it seems the lower unit should come off by just unbolting it and disconnecting the speedo tube. While speaking to other backyard mechanics in my marina they all say I will have to disconnect the shift cable from the upper cowling. Is this true. Thanks in advance for any help.

No....the shift rod disconnects from the lower unit like the F115 does.

They are probably OMC guys.

Default 2001 4 stroke 6 hp yamaha

Andy, I removed the 4 bolts and the lower unit separated and lowered about 2 inches and stopped. I didn't want to force it so I put it back together. Is there another step I am missing? I am trying to replace the impeller on a 2001 4 stroke 6 hp Yamaha long shaft.

Did you unthread the shift shaft union(connection) nut?

Andy

No I didn't. Wasn't sure how often you read the post, so I went to a local shop where I purchased the impeller. The mechanic mentioned the nut as you did above. I marked the big nut before backing off the smaller to ensure I get it back in the same spot. Job completed and shifts great with a good water stream. Followed most the steps in the post, some parts are different but after reading your post I thought I would be able to do this. Thank you very much for sharing, we (DIYers) just need some expert advice to tackle projects like this. It saved me over $200.00 doing the job myself and again I probably wouldn't have tried it without running across your post.

OK, I have been monitoring this post and the pictures are great. I began to change my water pumps by dropping the lower units and I realized that the starboard will not drop. So, I stopped and tried the Port, wont drop either. I notified the marina yard, Not Yamaha Certified, and they tried also without any success. Just want to reiterate that I did remove the 8 bolts in total and had the shifter at my helm in neutral, no dice on either engine. The engines are 2002 4 stroke 225hp. Is it possible that both shafts are seized up inside the power head? The marina wants to start pulling the power heads off and much more to try and fix the problem, again, not Ymaha guys. I was doing this as a maintenance item not because there was an issue. I dont know when the last time was they were changed since I bought the boat used but seems to be in really great shape. They are estimating the work to be well over $4000!!!! I think I want an extra opinion. Million dollar question: Is there something I was missing and is the road I am heading???
I would like some good news for change.... Anyone?

Chris ,
There should be nine bolts total. One under the rubber then 2 under the trim tab 3 n each side of lower unit. Go on to ship yards site and you will see what i'm talking about.
Good luck

Are you from S.I. ? Someone I know just ran in to same problem and they did some damage trying to hammer the lower unit off.Just wondering if it was you.

If all bolts are removed, which I think they are, what is my alternative? Anyone?
