Yes you can send me 2 sets . Also when I put my order in I ordered the stainless fuel filter before the VST and you sent me 2 hose clamps (6FL-24387 00-00) will one be enough for each motor or do I need 2 for each motor? If I need 2 for each add 2 more clamps.
Thanks

Hi Ralph,

Sorry for the delay.

You should only need the two clamps. The other side of that filter has a slip joint type connection.

Do you need the crimp tool for those fittings? I have a loaner I can send you. Let me know the parts are going out on Monday.

Thank you,

Andy

Andy, I wont be installing the filters until about mid march so I dont want to hold on to the crimpers for that long. Can I just use a pair of nail pullers and just not crimp down to hard on the clamp?
Thanks Andy

I have a 2004 Yamaha 70 2 stroke. Does it need to be in any particular gear when I remove the lower unit for water pump replacement?

Moorhen,

Usually in neutral. Just make the gear case is in true neutral before you slide it back on.

i have a 1987 9.9. the above procedure, with slight modifications works for it also. having a problem re-attaching the LU though. when pushing the LU up to bolt it on, it keeps forcing the shift rod upward forcing the shift handle to the forward position. if you put the shift handle in neutral it pushes the LU down. if i bolt it on with the shift handle in the forward position, it will not shift to neutral or reverse. after removing th LU i tried to move the shift rod in the LU up or down to no avail. what am i missing?
thanks,
jim

While waiting for Andy's input, maybe this will help. My T9.9 tech manual (2002) indicates "Set the shift cam to the reverse position. Hold the shift rod nut in the lowest position. Insert the drive shaft into the crankshaft, insert the water tube into the water seal, and insert the shift rod into the upper casing."

I hope this helps as I am about to attempt this myself on my engine. Let us know how it turns out.

bbogue,
all of the above instruction go fine, the problem starts when i connect the shift rod from the LU to the shift rod coming from the shift handle. with the shift handle in the reverse position, as i raise the LU to bolt it back on the shift rod will force the shift handle to the neutral and then forward position.
it's almost is if the shift rod is too long. i disconnected the shift rod just above the LU at the adjusting nut. any ideas what i could be missing?
thanks,
jim

Unique_Name,

My parts arrived yesterday (thanks Andy!). I'm going to be attempting my water pump repair in the next few days. I'll get back to you on this. Hopefully, Andy will have responded by then as well.

Unique_Name,

It may be a week or longer before I will be able to get back to you on what I discover about re-assembling the shift rod. I happen to have broken the shift rod in the course of removal of the lower unit. The long nut was galled on the shaft and when I forced it, the rod broke. The new parts are at least a week away. Sorry I won't be able to get back to you sooner. Please post if you are able to figure out the problem.

Jim,

Yes, the shift rod on the LU does move up and down (up is forward, down is reverse, I think). If I encounter the same issue with reassembly that you did, I plan to put the large nut (the one on the upper shift rod) as high as it needs to be so as not to interfere with the shift rod on the lower unit, then adjust as necessary to make the shift lever work. I'll also put the shift lever in whatever position works for reassembly.

Incidentally, overhauling the water pump went without a hitch.

Best of luck.

bill,

i thought it should, that must be my problem, my LU shift rod does not move up and down. it must be locked in the up posiition. i'm not sure how this happened, the motor shifted fine before i removed the LU. any ideas?

Jim,

Maybe during disassembly, as the lower unit was removed, the shift rod was pulled up before it was disconnected from the upper shift shaft. The lower shift shaft might then have become locked due to minor movement of the crankshaft/propshaft? Just guessing. You might try rotating the prop shaft back and forth to see if this frees up whatever is binding the shift rod. That's all I can think of. After that, I'd call or email Andy (SIM). Good luck.

jim,

Maybe we should continue our back-and-forth via PM's or email? I don't want to overload or hijack SIM's (Andy's) thread. We can post the results when done.

Jim,

Please see my separate post about reinstallation of the lower unit. The lower shift shaft apparently was pulled up too high during disassembly (in my case, too). I hope you got yours together OK.

I tried PMing you but got no response. Maybe its not working.

Best of luck.

Thanks again, Andy.
