Hello-
I have an 05 F115 that yesterday starting making a strange noise. Noises are difficult to describe, but I'm going to give it a shot:
It sounds like a bad bearing noise that changes with rpm's. It only seems to happen after working the engine for a while (i.e. high rpm's for 10 or more minutes) and then comes and goes for a few minutes until it promptly dissapears. It happens in gear or out of gear. It happens suddenly and stops suddenly- no fading, etc.
Any ideas where to look?
I'm going to run it in the driveway and see if I can make it go noisy. If I can, I'll listen around with a mechanics stethascope.
The motor is still under warranty, so I guess the best thing to do is take it into a shop. Anybody have any recommendations for a shop near Portland Maine? So far, I've just done maintenance myself.
I used the boat last night, and it still has the same noise. It sounds kind of like a loose alternator belt on a car, but no where near as loud. Just that whirling noise. This time, it did actually make the noise just leaving the ramp. Then it stopped for a while, then started again after a WOT blast.
Any ideas at all on where to look? Or, is this really a job for a professional? I've worked on alot of cars, and done some basic maintenance on the Yamaha.
If its just a noise its really hard to say without hearing it.
Is it under warranty?
Andy

Hi Andy-
No- no loss of power at all. No change in how it runs, starts, idles, anything ... except the noise.
Yes- it is still under warranty. I figured I need to just bring it in. I was hoping someone might have some experience with a marine mechanic here in Maine. Anytime I took my old boat in for work, they never seemed to fix it correctly, and it took weeks.

i just returned from vacation...the noise you describe sounds similar to the noise my F115 started to make while on vacation...like a loose belt or slipping belt on an automobile. Taking it to the dealer in a day or two, will hopefully get it repaired, whatever it is...hope they can hear it on the hose....
Hi John
sounds like a water pump noise.. this would not effect power idle etc. When the pump heats up going fast then you slow down you can hear the noise.
Good luck
ED
I also have noise issue on my Starboard motor. Its like a combo squeeking whirring noise that only seems to happen aftter the motor has been run for a short time in its operating range say 4000 RPMs. It doesn't seem to do it after longer running periods say an hour or so of cruising. It seems to happen very intermitently and I have not noticed any issues with power/performance. Does this also sound like a water pump problem? The engine has 107 hrs on it.
I think you guys are ok, really. The F115's, and other Yamaha outboards, have a wiper seal around the drive shaft just beneath the powerhead that squeaks/squeals from time to time. I got it once. I shot some fan belt dressing on it and it went away. I hope this is your problem, because it really is not much of an issue.
Yamaha actaully has a new grease that they suggest using on the drive shaft spline, drive shaft bushing area and the oil pump seal area. It is supposed to do a better job of keeping those areas lubed without washing away.
