Default fuel gauge

Andy, I have just purchaseda 2003 Key West 1720 with a 2 stroke 90. The gsas gauge does not work. I would like to know is the gauge sender a Yamaha part? If so could you provide the ohms it should have for empty and full or any info for testing the sender and gauge so I figure out which has the problem. also you sold me the software to hook my 2003 225 4 strokes up to my laptop. Will this set up work on this engine too. I have not had a chance to look at the engine yet. This boat belonged to a friend who takes good care of his stuff so when he said he was selling this boat I sent him a check and will get the boat later from him. He did tell me the gas gauge quit working last summer and the dealer in Panama City forgot to check it when he had it there for service in Oct.

Thanks Kirt

Default RE: fuel gauge

Hi Kirt,

The fuel tank level sending units are not a Yamaha part. The Yamaha MF speedo's can except 3 different types of ohm values. A fuel tank sending unit is a pretty common part that can be purchased at any West, Boat US ect.

The easiest way to test a sender while its still in the tank is to remove the wire(should be pink) off the sender terminal. If the tank is aluminum it should have a ground wire attached to it. With the key on take that wire and touch it to the tank. The gauge should go to full. If it does the gauge is fine and so is the wiring to it. Then its the sender.

If the fuel tank is plastic there should be a ground wire attached to the base of the sender. Do the same test as above but touch the wire to the ground on the sender.

No........ the YDS software does not work with a carbed 2-stroke. HPDI's are the only 2-stroke that are YDS capable.

Andy
