Default Shinnecock and Point Judith

I'm planning a fishing trip up north in August. The plan is to fish out of Shinnecock for a few days then go through the canal, spend a day or two on Shelter Island, and then on to Piont Judith for more tuna fishing. I have never been through the canal at Shinnecock any specific details I should know. My flybridge max height is 19 feet so I should clear the fixed bridges, but whats up with the locks?

If the locks are open the tide rips through them. If you are worried about your boat skills you might want to go when they are closed. When they are closed you will wait in front of them. Other boats will be waiting as well. When they open other boats will be coming out, wait for them to exit and then you will enter the lock (with other boats). Once inside you will tie up on the Port or starboard side and wait for the lock to close. Once the lock is closed they will either fill the lock or empty the lock depending on the tide in Peconic.
Passing through with the lock open is not that difficult but, you are going to be on vacation so it might not be worth the headache.

I'm not worried about my skills although I am concerned about others if the current runs as described. Is it tight quaters and are the waits long to lock through? When is the lock open and closed? On what tide phase?

Yes it is fairly tight quaters. No the wait is not that long (about 15 minutes). I do not know the lock schedule (probably in the Long Island Fisherman). The locks are closed whenever the tide is differant in Peconic and Shinnecock bays. I have not seen many boat on boat collisions. I have seen plenty of poor piloting accidents. Based on your statement I am sure you will be fine. Don't be afraid to apply the power if needed.

Sounds fine. I'm looking forward to some good tuna fishing when I get to RI.
