My pots go in in April, out in June. Back in around August and back out when it's just too damn cold.

Fishindoc you need to pull them at least once a week in order to turn any numbers. Believe it or not the lobsters can find their way in and out of a pot with no problem what so ever. Here's study that the University of New Hampshire did on lobsters. There are some videos on the right side of the page that show the lobsters coming in getting something to eat then leaving.

I agree with Jigger. After seeing a documentary regarding Lobsters traveling in and out of pots, I did my own test. I had some keepers in my pots and I put the pots back with them still inside. I came back 4 hours later and they were gone. I have found that checking my pots early in the morning produced the most keepers.

I only have 3. Any more becomes work. I only trap to feed me and the family. I pull by hand but I set my pots in 30' water max so it's no big deal.

Before you ask, bluefish heads for bait. Mackeral works MUCH better, but I refuse to pay for bug bait. I bycatch a fair number of skate and I use them for bait too but they don't produce as much.

i've tried mackeral butterfish tuna and bluefish all with success. i'll keep in mind the skate. i have three traps also and fish in 30-40 feet of water-it's not that bad hauling by hand. do you guys use two or three brick traps

I think mine are 2 brick traps.

I was having problems last year with a commercial guy. I started zip tying my doors shut to see if anyone was going in my traps. They were. I left a note inside a ziplock bag in the trap and it stopped. The note said, "are you so deserate that you have to mess with my traps?".

I pull my traps in June because of Stripers. When they're here, I have no time for anything else. Also, it gets rather crowded with traps and I get tired of relocating.

do any of you use a davit to pull pots by hand- if it saves your back it might be worth the expense.

I fish my traps in strings of three and a solo trap . I pull all of them by hand. Good work out and good rewards most of the time. I get my bait from the local super market. I asked the fish market manager to save all the fish he needs to dispose of and I pick it up twice a week most of the time it is too much but I grind a bunch of the fish up and use it for chum when fishing. I fish my traps in 12-30 feet of water and always do well. JOE
