Default Fishing Report - Jeffries Ledge - 6/13

Went out to "The Ridge" this AM, approx. 32 miles due
east of the Merrimack. Flat water and hungry fish.

All were caught on a mix of clams and Jigging at depths from
200' - 260'.

Brought home:

5 Cod to 38 inches - The largest one yakked up a mackeral and
a herring when he hit the deck. The mack was fresh. Many throwbacks,
including 3, 23 "ers which really annoyed the guy I went with, since they
would have been legal last year..

10 Haddock 21 - 24 inches. Many smaller.

3 Pollock - Good size, didn't measure.

1 Cusk 32 inches.

Not a bad first trip.

Good job CJ!! Glad you got out there. How's the debris field?
I need to burn some fuel out of the boat and drag it South! We'll have to do it again.

Thanks for the report CJ, I was wondering what the cod were up to on Monday while I was out fishing the Wentworth Tounament. I never saw the ocean so flat, not even a swell to be seen pretty much all day. Came into port 31 knots !!! you don't do that every day. I hope to get out this weekend weather permitting.

Cod this year is 24 inches. Haddock is 19", but we don't
keep any under 21".

We didn't see much in the way of debris. A few sticks here and
there but nothing big enough to to do any damage. Not that there
isn't any out there, but we didn't see any. A nice side effect of the
recent lousy weather is the lack of lobster pots. But I'm sure that
will change.

CJ run a little farther north. Try the area where Rob caught his big "guppie" last year and also try the area just to the southeast in 250-300 ft of water.

Fished Jefferys Monday. The tides were running hard so the drift was to fast to stay on the fish. We even had trouble anchoring to position over the fish. Still once achored ,not where we wanted to anchor, but we still managed to catch some nice haddock and one keeper cod and a whole bunch of small fish. The stripers are in the gloucester, rockport area in big numbers. the lobstermen are complaining the stripers are eating all the lobster and not many lobsters are making it to the traps.

It's that gray metal thingy that's tied onto the white 'rope' with a piece of chain. I'm just not sure how to drift with it hanging off the boat. If we put some bait on it will it catch the really big ones?

Mist-Rest,

Funny you should mention putting bait on the anchor. I had a buddy that use to send a ring down his anchor line. Attached to the ring was a snelled hook with bait. He caught many flounder that way.

We've done the same on the chum pot flounder fishing and got some flatties too.

Hard core cod fishermen like George generally do not anchor. At certain times however, if you put the boat in the right spot, anchoring can out produce drifting.

I am pretty much like George, "anti-anchor" ..... but I try and never rule out anything.

Fished Tillies yesterday. Flat seas with little to no drift. Finally found the fish in 300 to 285 feet. Caught a dozen haddock with 4 cod keepers, a couple of cusks and a couple of dogs

A forecast of 2 - 4's would not deter me from heading out. But I'm
always prepared to turn around if it starts looking ugly.

Things look good wave wise for tomorrow. I think I will give Jeffery's a try. I am taking out my father for Fathers day and he wants to catch haddock and cod. So what dad wants, dad gets.

I plan on launching at the high school. I hope launch at 5:30 to 6:00am.

Dave,

Don't be concerned with forecasted wave hieght. Look at wind diection and speeds and that will tell you what kind of a day you'll have.

Was on Jeffreys yesterday. Loaded with bluefish. Cod and haddock are still deep and some dogs have moved in for the summer.
