Default Great kills Harbor

I'm looking for some information on the launch ramp at the Great Kills National Park. I normally launch out of Keyport or the Highland depending on where I plan to fish. Quite often I end up in the Reach around 19 and 20, Princess Bay, or Old Orchard. These areas are closer to Great Kills then to the New Jersey side of the bay. I have not actually seen the ramp; I only discovered it through a web search. I' ld like to find out it's condition, if its a single or multiple ramp, is it crowded on the weekends, are their clean bathrooms (family fishing crew) can I get bait at the facility. Thank you for your time.

Oh it gets crowded on weekends! Capt Thunder might be able to give you more info. He docks closer to the ramp than I do. The ramp itself is in very good condition. You do need a permit from the Park Service to launch. Lots of fun watching the action at that ramp during the summer.

I used to live not too far from there. The ramp is in good condition. You do need a permit to launch. It is busy on weekends. As for facilities...basically a porta jon. The real bathrooms are on the beach side, not that far of a walk. As for bait&tackle, there are quite a few shops along Hylan Blvd, Nichols Marina might sell Bait & Tackle, also located in the park walkable to the launch.
Thats about all I know, good luck

Capt. Daddy.
There is one single large ramp with available docking at 2 sides. The ramp is wide enough for 2 trailers to launch at the same time. Of course it gets a little crowded on weekends in the summer, but not too bad in the springtime. There are Mr John bathrooms located through out the park. There is no bait at the facility. There is a bait shop on Hylan Blvd, about a 4 minute drive from the park.

Yes you need a permit to launch at the ramp. They are very STRICT about this, and the Parks Dept. gives out summons.

Justbe careful entering the Harbor. Stay between the channel markers and beware of the shoal on the port side while entering the harbor.
Any more questions, just PM me.
Good luck.

Fcal, you are right. It does get pretty entertaining on the ramp during the summer. Nothing like being in a slip.

Also, don't get to close to the surf casters you might end up with a 2 oz. treble hook earring. Montauk don't know nothing about combat fishing, 6-7 boats chasing a pod of bunker between moorings and joe bag a donuts hucking lead at you. Now that's entertainment!

Been trailering my boat and launching there for a few years now and think it is a very good launch ramp. Plenty of water at low tide, the docks are in great shape and if you there early enough there is hardly that much traffic on the weekends. My old man cant see spending $3500 to keep the boat at a marina so to the launch ramp it is. One thing of note is on a moon tide at ebb, do not try to cut through the middle of the harbor. It gets very shallow in there, i know this because I banged up my prop through there once. Stay to either side and you will be fine. The yearly permit as of last year was $50 and can be purchased at the Parks Police barracks in the park itself. Tight lines.
