Default WTB used lobster traps

I'm looking for 10 lobster traps, bouys, lines, etc. Any leads would be appreciated.
How early do you start lobstering?
Thanks,
Adrian

Check the want ad. You can start anytime. $40 permit. It will make a mess of your boat.

Ask around at some of your local tackle shops if they know where you could buy used traps. They aren't usually advertised too much. You should be able to find used traps for about $5-$10 a piece depending on what shape they are in. Buoys, line, sticks, bait bags, etc. you might want to just buy new. They aren't that expensive and you will need to paint your colors on the buoys anyway.

And ccm is right about the mess. If you have a nice boat that you are concerned about you will need to be careful hauling the traps in so you don't scrape anything as well as make sure you have a raw water washdown system in place. Makes cleanup a lot easier.

Yes you can start lobstering any time but peak season isn't usually until July-September depending on where you choose to drop your traps.

Also, 10 is quite a few traps to start with unless you are real ambitious and patient. You might want to try 2-3 to see how it goes and how you like it before you jump up to the 10 pot limit.

Adrian you might want to check out New England Marine and Industrial in Portsmouth. They sell new gear and have a bulletin board there were local commercials post used gear for sale.

Go up to North Hampton Beach NH after a storm. For some reason the locals dont retrieve their traps when they wash ashore. Give 'em a week to be safe.

I wouldnt touch anything that still has bait or lobster remains in it. They're going to smell enough as it is.

Thanks guys. I'm not worried about the boat. I was told it is bullet proof and I can't wait to mess up them pretty white seats. the boat can carry 10 pots without trouble I know the area well - use to dive for those little bugs a couple of decades ago and I have you guys to talk me through any troubles right? So why not dive right in. I didn't think taking pots or any gear from the beach was legal is it? If it is the beach must be loaded with traps right now after that north easter. I'm trying to beat codfisher for the most toys.
thanks,
Adrian

You are correct.....its illegal to take pots even if they have washed up on the beach. Try the want ad...As far as the tackle goes buy new as you must put your own colors and numbers on them. Go to Winchester's in Gloucester, very helpful and is used to dealing with rec lobster man not just commercial guys.
I did it for a few years but gave it up because it makes a complete mess of the boat.

Good luck

Thanks for the info guys. I'm in the same boat (pardon the pun) as Adrian. I live in Gloucester and just bought a used 19 ft. center console for bass/blue fishing and hopefully to tend 5 or so lobster pots. I've never lobstered before, so I'm trying to learn as much as I can!!

Try this site. It is the Mass. Lobstermen Association web site. They have all kinds of gear for sale. There are comm. lobstermen out there selling thier used pots. Which they probably used for 2 years which still have a lot of good use in them.

Check the side bar for the sell, swap, buy link. There are a lot of used lobster pots here. Just check the phone #'s to see if they are in your area.

unbelievable but i recreational lobster here in oc maryland. I think i'm the only one that does it. you don't even need a license. I got my traps by asking a couple of the local lobsterman. they were glad to sell me a couple of their used traps. not pretty but work fine. if you're hauling by hand i would go with the smaller traps. i started with 36 inch three bricks and they were a bear. now i have 30 inch two bricks. i catch lots of bugs. I'm no expert but if i can help answer any questions pm me

Not to be the negative guy, but I put out traps all the time in Gloucester, and someone does not like it, because they come up missing all the time. Don't put your traps around alot of commercial guys...they're good guys, but they're in it for a living and your in the way. Make sure each trap or string has a second bouy attached, to increase your survival rate.
I'll be putting my 6 out this summer and watching them a few mornings. It is not all fun and games. Lobsters were hard to come by last year, and they dont like all of us throwing in another 10 traps, further diminishing their $$.

Good luck, and keep alert.

Ive been a 10 potter for about 5 years. Its all the above, messy, time consuming, rewarding and good-beer-drinking activity. The competition is getting fierce. Where I work em, for 4 years there were no commercials, now its loaded. I was continually getting picked last year (i got an idea who, but cant catch him).

Went from over 65 bugs (9 pots) the year B4, down to around 30 (7 pots) last year. A pain in the butt....but Can't wait to start!!!

Last year I saw a lobsterman cut the line on a trap that came up with his string of traps. Be careful not to place your traps across a string of traps. I'm in it just for the fun.

hinmo try putting some small wire ties on the doors. If your in an area were there are a ton of pots it could be anyone pulling them. Try staying away from high traffic areas also. A friend of mine was putting his pot by the end of the canal. He would have to replace 5-6 traps ever year because his buoys would be missing. He claims someone was cutting him off. More then likely he was getting cut off by props. When the boats are coming in at night.

I learned the hard way about float rope and sink rope- was using all sink rope and kept snagging my line on wrecks. then I learned about float rope- now I use 20 feet of sink rope on top and 30 feet of float rope on bottom. works great. never had a buoy go missing from cutoffs either.
