Default Casting net

Question? I have a boat with a live bait well. Can someone suggest a size of casting net I use buy to load up on Killies? Does anyone else in the Great South Bay use one?

You should get a sein net for killies. I use a cast net in Moriches and Shinnecock for Bunker. If you put Killies in your well They will clog the outlet and every thing will die, also killies are tuff to get out of the well if you are down to a handfull of pieces. Having lived and learned I took a piece of surgical tube and hose clamped a piece of screen to the tube and stuck the tube in the outlet so the smaller baits would not clog the hole.

I use a 12ft dia. net for killies and spearing. Works fine. Smallest mesh possible. Mine is a 1/4". Killies will last a long time, they are quite hardy. Spearing will die no matter what you do. I freeze them. What ever net you buy, practice in the back yard not when the bait is around the boat. There is a learning curve. Good luck.

If just a beginner, I would stick to a much smaller cast net. Try a 6 ft dia. and see what you think of it. They are much easier to throw and certainely will get the job done. As already stated, go with as small mesh size as you can find. It does have its drawbacks though as you will find yourself picking stuck spearing out, but hey what can you do!
