By JODY RECORD
Union Leader Correspondent

STRATHAM - ...

Former Rockingham County attorney Stephen Woods, 55, and his son, Asher, 20, are believed to have set sail from Rockland, Maine, Saturday on the 41-foot, two-mast vessel the NAOBI. When the pair didn't arrive at Rye Harbor Monday as planned, a marine search was launched.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Frank Farina, stationed in New Castle, said a C-130 aircraft out of North Carolina and a 270-foot cutter from Portsmouth had been called in yesterday to assist.

Not one lobsta boat went out the Saco on Saturday and I only saw one boat that did all weekend...some yahoo trying to get his last ride before he pulled his boat. He was lucky it wasn't his last ride period. I thought of taking one last ride with stabil in the tank before pulling the boat but, I was only gonna stay in the river. Decided not to even do that once I saw all the debris floating down river. Only boating I did last weekend was from the slip to the trailer.

Wow, out in that kind of weather in a sail boat with no life line and no life jacket. Very sad, and very unnecessary...

Those folks live less than 5 miles from me. I just don't get the no life jacket thing. I thought all the blow-boaters wore those fancy-pants inflatable things. Damm shame, tho and totally unneccesary...

From the sound of it, I dont think the son knew how to operate the boat and its equipment.

Looks like someone swiped their PFD's and the skiper didnt want to buy more just for the last trip of the season. No explanation why he wasnt wearing a safety line.

Stephen Woods death-at-sea case closed; no charges
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Portsmouth – The Coast Guard has closed its investigation of the October death of Stratham lawyer Stephen Woods, who is presumed to have drowned after falling off his sailboat during a storm.

Woods, an experienced sailor, was sailing with his son, Asher, 20, from Rockland, Maine, to Rye Harbor when he disappeared on Oct. 15.

Angela McArdle, a Coast Guard spokesman in Washington D.C., said the report on the investigation won’t be released, pending a final review, but closing the case signifies that no criminal charges will be filed, the Portsmouth Herald reported yesterday.

The 41-foot Naobi was lost for five days before it was found off Cape Cod on Oct. 20 with Asher Woods aboard. He said his father had fallen overboard days earlier.

No one could explain how an experienced sailor like Stephen Woods, who was 55, became lost at sea. There also were conflicting reports about whether lifejackets were aboard.

McArdle said the Portland, Maine, Coast Guard led the investigation.

Woods’ wife, Deborah, declined to comment.
