Wife and I are coming to Cape Cod in October. Staying in Falmouth. Flying into Providence. Any local advice on transportation? We really don't need a car every day while in Cape Cpd but not sure what choice we have. Are there any alternative modes of transportation in Falmouth other than a rental car?
I am open to suggestions on transportation, sites to visit etc. Thanks for the help.
Contact the Chamber of Commerce. They will point you in the right direction. There is a ton to see this time of year and some great fishing to be had.
You may want a car as you can go to Newport RI, Jamestown RI, within an hour and a half. Also, visit the National Sea Shore. Some real beautiful beaches. Chatham, Orleans, Truro, P-Town.
Unfortunately, you really do need a car if you plan to get around at all....
Falmouth is a big town in terms of square miles. I don't think they have public transportation and if they do, I never heard about it (and I spent summers there my whole life).
There are a few cab companies, but I've only used them after spending too much time at the Casino or Brothers 4 (boy that's a long time ago...). I wouldn't count on them for day to day getting around.
If you really object to getting a car, go to Newport RI. Lots to do within walking distance.
...make sure you get over to MV.* The Island Queen leaves from Falmouth Harbor...
You will need a car. Used to be a bus from the Prov airport to Falmouth, not so now. Falmouth has a nice downtown for the wife to shop (bring $$), access to the Vineyard through Woods Hole or Falmouth Harbor. October is off season, sweatshirts on the beaches a must. If you are interested in fishing, look into chartering a trip to the Elizabeth Islands for striped bass. Eastman's Tackle on main street can point you in the right direction.
One day trip you should make if you can is to Provincetown at the tip of Cape Cod. Beautiful beaches, dunes, shopping, dining. Also a great spot to take a whale watching trip. On the way home stop in Chatham for a drink and dinner at The Chatham Squire or the Impudent Oyster (high end).
October is a beautiful time on the Cape and there are lots of fishing opportunities as well if you are interested.
I grew up in Falmouth and agree with everyone else you will need a car. If you are going early to mid October and want to charter a boat, let me know we are located in Falmouth inner Harbor. Send me a PM if interested.
you will need a car....make sure you go to provincetown, race point, truro area...to me, the cape doesn't really start until the orleans rotary
the best lobster roll in the world can be found at the Chart House, i think within falmouth town limits, but in one of the many "neighborhoods" falmouth has
have fun...it is a beautiful spot and a great time of year

the surf should have plenty of stripers, and probably blues....try "the backside"...nauset to race point beaches.....scout at low tide, blah, blah blah.....
there is excellent fishing to be had offshore as well, but i don't know how you could get in on a charter...the headboats usually go for scup and tautog
vineyard sound has been slow i am told, i think because the water is still a bit warm
when in october will you be coming?......i am headed to the vineyard sunday oct 2 for a week...haven't gone away in a while, it will be a nice change

I think we arrive on the 12th and leave on the 18th. I won't be able to bring any gear but was thinking about a charter. Have an acquaintance in NJ that I might could beg a tuna trip on but that may be too far of a drive while on vacation.
Oakcrest must pre-date me, unless it is/was a red "house type" bar on Rt 28...if so, then I barely remember it...
One clarification The "Chart House" is actually the Chart Room in Catuamet/Bourne...and I agree on the lobster rolls even though it ain't cheap, it is sure good.
Oct is a great month for stripers inshore. Offshore will be Tuna, tuna, tuna. But the weather windows get small and it is a long run...
The Wellfleet Oyster Fest starts on the 15th! Lots of fun!
I am not sure if the whale watch boats will still be running but if they are and the weather is favorable. I highly reccommend the trip.
Not only are the whales spectacular but there are some wonderfull photo op's aroung Long Point to the Race.
Enjoy.

Great ideas! That sounds great about the oyster fest!! I can't wait. I am hoping for some cold crisp air...something we don't get alot of here in Florida.
Jagsare1 - For offshore fishing you are prime time for Bluefin. CC Bay and Stellwagon are loaded with SBFT (30 - 80lbs) and this is about the best time for Giants that you can get.
Have a good time - you are hitting the absolute best time of the year for the cape - the crowds all went home, but all the restaurants are still open and the fishing is prime. October beats August here every year.
Carefull with the SBFT (30 to 80 pounds). NMFS just raised the Curved Fork Length keeper limit to 47 inch CFL. I know the 30 - 60 pounders we were catching were smaller than 47 inches....more like 30 to 40 inches.
It's all catch and release from Oct 1 until next year unless you are on a real*nice sized*fish....
OK, I completely screwed up. We are coming but I told you the wrong month. The dates are the same but it is in November. Sorry about that. The only thing I will miss is the oyster fest. darn, I was looking forward to that.
Para - Thanks for that. I had gotten the notice from nmfs when it came out - I fish under the charter/headboat category anyway, and really only have a few more tuna charters booked. It is a bummer getting knocked down to 1 fish - but I think the small fish got hit pretty hard this season, so whatever is best for the fishery is good for me.
Now if I can keep the doggies off my blues tomorrow, maybe I can find one of those schoolies big brother.
