Default Wireline and Shrink Wrap

Guys,

I just saw an interesting idea on another forum.* The biggest PITA for me with wireline is carefully passing the wire/dacron knot (albright usually) through the guide when letting the line out.* If you are not careful the whole reel gets messed up from backlash. (BTW, I usually fish 3 "shots" of wire seperated by dacron.* That way I know the exact depth and I jig on the dacron and not the wire.)

The idea I saw was putting some electrical wire shrink wrap over the knot.* This way it is smoother and easier to pass through the guides.* Has anyone tried this and what do they think?

Lastly, how hot do you need to get the electrical shrinks and does this cause a weakening in the dacron?* I assume the wire would be uneffected or electricians wouldn't use it.

I read a good way to do this for making offshore stiff rigs is to put them in the oven to cause the shrink wrap to shrink.* But that isn't very practical with 150 feet of wire attached....

A hair dryer will work to shrink it. Start far enough away, doesnt take too much heat to shrink. An alternative would be to use the liquid coating that they dip plier handles in. Find it at most auto stores. No heat needed, just air dry. Dab or brush on. Just a thought.

i agree , try the liquid electrical tape. It holds up fine and would probably be easier than sliding a heat shrink onto your connections. It works good for "blacking out" crimps on tuna gear as well

I tried to put shrink wrap on the wire every 100 feet to mark the yardage. Every time the wire broke it was at the shrink wrap. I don't know if it was due to the heat it took to shrink the rap or salt that built up at the splice? But it always broke at the shrink rap. Hope this is a help.

Bill, i have to believe the heat from the torch or blow dryer can't be good for line/wire?

Have used Spro 80# swivels for the last couple of years between connections, They have worked flawlessly and go smoothly through sic guides. I have to watch for them to go through.

I'm with this guy......I don't bother with the Dacron splices. If you don't keep up on them religiously, you'll lose a lot of gear. Plus they are a pain in the ass to do.

I use small bullet swivels to separate my lengths. They pass the rollers fine.....plus, haiving rollers, when i do jig (if I'm not using umbrellas), I can jig on the wire, because of the roller diameter.

slide the wire into the dacron about a 1/2 inch and poke out the side.
fold the wire end over tight to itself with plyers.leave about three inches of wire tag end.
then snug up the dacron into the bend. hold the bend/dacron with needle nose and barrel wrap the wire tightly over the frayed dacron end about five times. pinch the end of the barrel wrap with needle nose and work the tag end till it breaks off flush. now take a lighter and burn the frayed dacron end, with the wire in the middle. then smush the wet melted dacron into the end of the barrel wraps and wear the tag end was.
this is the strongest/smallest/ smoothest connection you will ever see. the wire will break before the connection.and you won't even feel it going thru the guides.
i have of step bye step picture if you want it?
