Default Lower CT river stripers

Anyone done the april run for stripers? Since we can't use live herring for bait, what techniqe do you use? what do you look for to locate fish. I'm talking Essex and below area. Thanx for any input.

Try trolling a tube and worm rig. Bubble Gum or Red work nice in front of the woodlot just above Old Lyme.

I live i essex and fish the spring run in the river every year. From the 2nd week in april until mid to late may, the lower river is loaded with schoolies. 100 fish per tide is not uncommon when you get into them. Fish the various rock piles on the east side of the channel below the RR bridge and you will do fine. soft plastics (weighted and unweighted) such a sluggos and zoom flukes work well. I like yellow in the spring as it shows up well in the off-color water.

oh yeah, there are also bigger fish in the river at that time as well. they can be a little tougher to locate...

I usually just fly fish, but last year I started doing a little bit of live eel fishing at night. mostly on the surrounding reefs though, not the river. people do liveline in the river but I don't know much about it.

you really should check out ctfisherman.com. it has a wealth of knowledge.

live eels are great bait for that big keeper that you've been waiting for. 5/0 octopus hook through the bottom jaw up through the eye socket and cast away. i've fished with countless eels and i've never had one fail except once. and that was low tide under the newburyport bridge. chunk herring and mackerel works great too.
