I recently purchased a 38' former charter sportfishing boat and it's giong to be delivered to me on the north shore of Massachusetts in March. Here is my question. I've owned boats before, but never anything of this size and with all the electronics. I would like to find a captain in my area who I could hire on a day-to-day basis (maybe hourly if that better suits) to help me learn the boat without having problems or doing any damage in the process.
Have any of you had experience doing this? Any thoughts about the best way to contact/select a captain. I am in no way going to start a charter fishing business (I've already built a business of my own in another field), but a captain who would help me get to know the fishing game around here would be a plus.
I know someone who got help from the local Power Squadron. It may be an avenue to pursue. Or try your local fishing mags. Captains sometimes advertise their services in the classified section.
Ask your local harbor master. They might know a skipper who is looking for a way to earn a few more bucks on the water*without it counting against their allotment. Decide in advance if they will be the "captain" or the "mate" when you're out with them.

I am from the North Shore... I have fished that area for years... I have commercial fished most of the area and know it well... I don't know exactly what you were looking for? for someone to run your boat and take you out? or for someone to show you the area??? let me know more of what you are looking for....
salty... it was 17.... and she treated me well (you know it did)....did take it to stellwagen after those stupid tunas... hahaha... its gone now though...took a different fishing job this summer... will tell you about it some other time not on here...
no commotion...in my case, that boat was perfect for commercial bass fishing, I was a mate on a charter boat, but this let me make some extra cash on my own, could fit a limit of 30 in that thing... got me to where I needed to go, but was not exactly the best set up... had to ask guys for compas headings sometimes(no gps).... salty is my buddy... just busting balls... I have run larger boats and will be a mate on a 40 foot boat this year... I wasn't neccesarilly implying I had the knowlege, but I know people who do... I know the area as far as fishing goes up here very well, but do not have expirience with the engine maitenence and things of that sort, but know a lot of people who do, some of who could be interested.
